Urban Legend: Congressional members receive lavish pensions

Claim: Members of Congress receive lavish pensions but are not required to pay Social Security.

Status: False.

Another obviously false urban legend sent to me by my sil (and probably everyone else in her address book as well.) The verison she sent me featured Senator Robert Byrd (my senator, BTW) stating the millions he and his wife (deceased) are going to receive when he retires. He's 88 years old and was recently reelected for another six years. Last I heard dead people didn't get much in the line of pensions.

I think my sil believes every bit of garbage that comes to her in box.

I really dislike forwards and chain letters, even if they're family they end up in the spam box.

Re: Urban Legend: Congressional members receive lavish pensions

I have a friend who is always sending me emails like this. She evidently believes them all as well because she always adds a comment to them. I get so annoyed by them that I make a point to send her the link showing that it's an urban legend and not true. I keep thinking maybe she'll get the hint and at least not send them to me anymore or take the time to research them herself before sending them on.

I send the snopes link for things like that, too, when my SSIL sends me things. Sometimes, though, they're not just out-and-out false; there's a kernel of truth in them.
