For those who don't attend church...

... and for those that do

What do you do to teach your children about God, if you do? I am looking for ways to bring God more into our lives, but I don't plan on attending church.

Re: For those who don't attend church...

I am not sure what to suggest, since Emily attends a parochial preschool and we do attend church, a lot of our conversations about God are prompted by what she learns at school or at church. I would suggest going to your local Christian bookstore and finding some books you can read with your kids. If you don't want to buy them brand new, go there, get titles and authors, and see if you can find them used on Amazon or other places on the internet.

I think the key is to find a natural segway into talking about God. Maybe you could start saying Grace before meals, if you don't already do that, and then you can spend some time at the table talking about God and all He does for us? I'll keep thinking about this one. I might come up with something useful for you!

We go to church and the kids go to CCD. We also read the children's bible at night and the kids really like the vacation bible school they have in the summer. Maybe y'all could start the bible as a family?

At our church we have Awanas. Some people who don't attend our church bring their kids to it. They are out for the summer now but they have it usually during the school year. I'm not sure if all churches who have Awanas clubs are like that or not.

Cheryl, do you attend a Baptist church? I think Awana is a Baptist ministry for kids. It is only during the school year. Brenda do your kids have friends or cousins who attend church? If so, you might want to look into VBS. It's a fun way to learn about God, and it is something that all denominations offer, even inter-denominational churches do VBS.

Brenda, Rick Osborne has a book titled Talking to Your Children About God. I looked inside it on Amazon, and the table of contents looks pretty good. I think I am going to look for it at my local used bookstore.
One of the Chapters or keystones is, "Can I raise good kids who believe in God without taking them to church?"

I go to a non-denominational church.

Re: For those who don't attend church...

Ally does go to church every Sunday with my MIL, SIL and her kids. We have a children's bible that we read periodically - the same one I read to Drew from. She is already signed up for VBS - this will be her 3rd year and she loves going. It's in the evenings this year for some reason. They don't take kids until they are 4 and only go up to age 12, so Drew can't go. He is the one I would like to get more involved. He has talked about going with friends and I encourage that. He has attended a few times with MIL, but he doesn't really like that church. It's small and they don't have many teens (but have tons of kids Ally's age).

We do say grace when we eat at the table, which isn't very often, unfortunately. Ally and I say grace even when we eat out. (You should see Drew roll his eyes when she makes everyone hold hands! )

Tammy, that sounds like a good book! I will see if the local used bookstore has a copy. Thanks!
