Italian Court Orders Name Change
December 23rd, 2007

An Italian court has ruled that a couple could not name their son “Friday” and ordered that he instead be called Gregory after the saint whose feast day he was born on. “I think it is ridiculous they even opened a case about it,” the family’s lawyer, Paola Rossi, told Reuters by telephone from the northern city of Genoa on Tuesday.

I'm sorry - while that may be a strange name, I don't think ANY government should have the right to make you change your child's name.

What do you think?

It's a weird name, but I've heard worse. I take it they are huge Robinson Crusoe fans. Other countries have strange laws. Heck, our country has some pretty odd laws too. They can still call the child whatever they like. Among international injustices, this isn't a big one for me.

I agree with you Brenda. What right does the government have in telling them what they can and can not name their child? It isn't hurting them any if they name their child Friday.

Maybe not, Lenora. But since when does someone - anyone - else get the right to name your child? Heck, they didn't even let them choose a different name. The judge picked it for them!
