Has anyone ever had an amnio test? I am having one on Wednesday and am a little nervous. I have heard different things, so I was just wondering what you felt during that test?
I had one when I was pregnant with Ally. I didn't really feel anything except a small pinch during the procedure when they actully put the needle in. I did feel afterwards as though someone had kicked me from the inside at the insertion site. It only lasted for about a day or so. Not painful, more very uncomfortable.
They told me that I have to be off my feet for 24 hours afterwards or it can cause some pain. I am just ready for this to be over and to find out if the baby is ok!
Yeah, they told me to stay off my feet, too. I just spent the rest of the day lying in bed and I was fine. Like I said, it's more uncomfortable than anything else. I won't say it's pleasant, but it's really not too bad. And that is coming from the world's biggest weinie - me! LOL!
I had one with both of my boys. But mine were to make sure their lungs were developed so we could proceed with the the inductions so I was full(ish) term. With Zach it caused a contraction when they inserted the needle which just felt like a giant cramp and they had to hold it in place until my uterus relaxed. Not the most pleasant but it was ok. With Noah it was just a very quick pinch. I was able to watch on the untrasound machine as they placed the needle. BTW--both of mine returned great news and I pray yours does too.
How long does it take for them to get the fluid? I am scared I will pass out or get sick to my stomach. I sometimes do that when they take blood, but both of those times I had nothing to eat before then.
It only take a few minutes. 5-10 depending on the skill of the technician. They had to poke me twice because Ally moved and they hit the unbilical cord the first time. So, about 10 minutes total for both. It really doesn't take long.
Yeah, just a few minutes. It's takes awhile to prep and get you all set up. It's all very sterile. Everything comes all sealed in a pack--everything they ned is all in a pack that they unwrap. It depends on finding a pocket where the baby isn't to pull the fluid from. Another interesting thing is as soon as the needle is in they retract the sharp and it can't "poke the baby". The tube of the needle is there but the sharp part isn't. At least that is how they explained it to me. They use the sharp to get in but then the baby isn't in danger of moving and getting stuck.
I was talking to a friend and we asked if she'd had an amnio. Is it good to get even if you've had a good pregnancy or is it just for those babies who are suspected to have a problem? When we asked our friend she said she would never get one because of the risk of it putting you into labor. Is this true?
I was at term so the risk was nil--it didn't matter at that point. We were actually checking to make sure the lungs were developed b/c we were inducing early and they were developed so we went ahead with the induction. I had the induction b/c I had a previos full term stillbirth (cord accident) and we didn't want to wait to go into labor again and risk something happening so we were inducing shy of 37 weeks.
