Should the US allow drilling for oil in the Arctic?

Should the United States Congress allow drilling for oil in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge?

I was thinking about all the resources the US actually has, but cannot or will not use. What do you think?

Personally, I think we should. We have allowed ourselves to become more and more dependant on foreign oil - hence the financial crunch all of us are feeling at the pump, which in turm leads to higher prices elsewhere. If we (the US) were to take advantage all the resources we have, most of this could be eliminated, IMO.

Re: Should the US allow drilling for oil in the Arctic?

I read an article that said it would make more sense for the US to drill in Alaska and then sell that oil to countries close by rather than try to get it into the US market. The reason was that because Alaska is so far away from the other states that it would cost more to get it here than it would to get it to countries like Japan. Then the money made off the sale of our own oil could be put into the economy somehow to offset gas taxes and hopefully help the prices we're paying go down. The article actually made sense, while my explaining it may not be.

But regardless, I do think we should start drilling in the US if nothing else, to supplement the foreign oil on the market and hopefully that would help prices go down. But then I look at these oil/gas companies and their profits and know that they'll fit tooth and nail against US drilling and even if it somehow manages to happen, they'll still be profiting off it and gas prices won't go down. I honestly think the prices we're paying now are here to stay.

Yes. I hate being dependent on another country for something so precious, especially since we have some nice reserves here in the US.

Re: Should the US allow drilling for oil in the Arctic?

No. High gas and electric prices are here to stay. I believe it's price gouging. Even if we ripped out every inch of natural wilderness for it's coal and oil, fossil fuels would still be running out. It is long past time to use clean, renewable resources.

Unfortunately, I think even if production costs go way down, and we use cheap, renewable, clean power - energy prices will probably still not go down. Why? Because the fat cats at the top are actually in charge of a lot of this world and they are loving getting fatter and fatter. But I also believe that like an actual morbidly animals, they will eventually succumb to their own obessive greed and then some new fat cats will emerge.

We might as well save the natural beauty that is Alaska for future generations. We can't save all the world's natural wonders, but we can protect and preserve our own.

Yes, I believe we should open those resources for drilling and be as unintrusive to the environment in those areas as possible.

I agree 100% with you! Well put!

Re: Should the US allow drilling for oil in the Arctic?

The thing is, there have been several plans over the years that would allow us to drill without overly disturbing the area. The wildlife would still be there and able to live, while we would be able to add to our own resources. Most of these plans are actually feasible. But the enviro-nazis have a cow whenever it is even mentioned. I am all for not disturbing the area any more than we absolutely have to, but I am also a firm believer that the animals WILL survive if we are careful.
