Mispronouncing certain letters....

...got any at-home activities??

To make a long story short, my daughter is in Kindergarten and at the beginning of the year I asked to have her checked out for her letters (L's are her biggest problem, but there are a few others) and the therapists at the school said she would grow out of it. Well a few months back I asked to have her checked again and they said yes she needs speech therapy ...DUH!

So on Tuesday the 13th she was to have another meeting with them but we had massive fires and school was closed that day. She needed to be evaluated again and it was going to take about 2 hours. So blah blah blah they finally call me today to tell me that there is no way they are giong to be able to finish her paperwork until the beginning of next year

So back to my question at the top......anyone know of things to do over the summer to help her with her letters? Websites? Free is always better

Thanks!

Re: Mispronouncing certain letters....

I had the same problem with my DD. After doing some research, I found out that most of it they will grow out of. They actually have a list of letters that kids should master by a certain age. Ally had therapy for 30 minutes once a week this year and it made a huge difference. What they told me to do was to correct her (gently) and have her try to pronounce the word the right way. It can get monotonous, but it does help.

There are several sites online that have exercises you can do to help. Just do a search for "speech exercises" on Google or Yahoo. I don't have them saved anymore since Ally has outgrown hers, but I found tons when I searched.

Re: Mispronouncing certain letters....

Ally had problems with the letters G, L and R. The R is one of the most common ones. They should master G and L by the time they are 6/7. She turned 7 in January, still had a problem, so therapy this year. It makes a huge difference. I wouldn't sweat it.

Re: Mispronouncing certain letters....

Thanks!

Just this morning her little sister (she'll be 4 in 2 weeks!!!!!!!) asked how to spell dresser and Summer started with a G. Today in her school work she put POT for PART, R's in the middle of words are hard for her. Her biggest is L and we correct her....she'll even correct herself sometimes.

I think her biggest problem is that she can't keep her mouth shut LOL and once she gets going she cuts her words in half. Once she slows down she's does a little better. Sometimes I wonder if it's me just because I want my baby girl to be perfect

Re: Mispronouncing certain letters....

My daughter had similar problems. She would mispronounce SC as ST--she would say Stooby Doo instead of Scooby Doo, and the letter B in certain instances, such as she would say Alabama as AlaVama. Emily also would say Zis or Zat instead of this and that. The audiologist at her ENT's office started talking speech therapy with us a couple or years agao. I have a friend who is a speech pathologist, and I called her. She said that Emily was too young then 3 1/2 to 4 years old) to start speech therapy, and that speech pathologists don't even start working with kids until they are 5, and they have to have bigger problems to tackle than mispronouncing letters. She told me to just read to her and really make sure I enunciated when I spoke or read to her, just to talk to her and read and reinforce those sounds in a natural way. Emily did outgrow it, and it was so gradual, we just noticed it one day. I would not sweat it either.

Re: Mispronouncing certain letters....

It's completely normal, and most of the time, they do grow out of it when they've been around other kids for a while and hear them talk.

I know this probably sounds really cheesy, but try the Leap Frog video "Leap's Day at the Letter Factory". IT's a really cute little video that has a catchy little song about the sounds that the letters make. I have an autistic son who had a speech delay, and he LOVED this video. He still does, and he's speaking much more clearly now.

We were told too that it is all normal at that age and that they do outgrow it. Liz had problems with all the common letter sounds, and now she has outgrown it.

Re: Mispronouncing certain letters....

Wow...you guys are great. Thanks so much for everything!

She'll start her speech therapy next year (1st grade) shortly after school starts and they finish some paperwork that they didn't get to finish this year.

I'll have to look into that video, thanks. She just got a Leapster for her bday and it has letter sounds. She has memorized the song that she learned at school. She says her words pretty good after we correct her.
