all day kindergarten?
Re: all day kindergarten?
personally, as a working out of the house mom, if they go all day five days a week that would be a huge blessing for me!

Re: all day kindergarten?
Its full day here. Has been since the year before Sam started school I think. For us working moms its a blessing. And they do snack and rest time so it isnt too hard on the kids either.

Re: all day kindergarten?
My kids don't go to daycare so I don't like the idea of all day kindergarten. I think 5-6 year olds are too young to be in school all day. But around here, even when I went to kindergarten many moons ago, it's always been all day. They do have snack and nap times and recess but being in school from 8-3 is a long day for kids of any age, let alone those just starting out. Then add to that travel time to and from school - that's one long day!Next year will be my first experience with one of my kids going to kindergarten so we'll see how it goes. If DH & I feel that it's too much, we have no problem picking our child up early (since they are counted present as long as they stay until 11:30) or even pulling her out of school and waiting a year since legally they don't have to be in school until the age of 7.

Re: all day kindergarten?
When Alyssa went it was 5 days but half days. They have since changed it to 3 FULL days. So when Kate gets there she will go all day.I am all for it! At least for mine I think it will (did) do them good to have that interaction all day with peers and having a schedule.

Socially it's great for them, I wish our kindy was all day. It's been a struggle to cram everything into such a short day for him.

Re: all day kindergarten?
My DD went to preschool this year to get her use to a school-type routine for next year. She went 3 mornings a week for 3 hours each day, and it was more than enough as far as socialization. She made many new friends. So I don't think all day kindergarten is needed for socialization. JMO.

Re: all day kindergarten?
Both of mine went all day. Drew had problems at first becasue he was so used to napping longer than they did, but otherwise he was fine. He was a daycare kid before that (while I was in school), so he was used to being gone all day.Ally had a few more problems. She has never been a napper and I stayed home with her, so she was used to a much more relaxed type of schedule. However, after a few weeks, she really settled in and just loved being with other kids all day long.
Personally, I think it is good for the kids. It does take them a while to get used to it, but I think that would happen whether it was full of half days.

Re: all day kindergarten?
All three of my kids had all day kindergarten, and they did fine. They didn't get nap time or anything like that. The school really emphasized to parents at the kindergarten screening that the kids needed to be ready for school, and if their child had a late birthday, it might be in their best interest to wait a year before sending their child. My youngest just finished kindergarten. His teacher used to teach first grade, and at their end of the year program, she said that his class knew as much at the end of this year as the kids she taught in first grade knew at the end of the year back in the 90s.

Re: all day kindergarten?
One of the districts closeby has it, but ours didn't. They are starting it here next year. I think for Jonathan, it would have been great. He did really well with the all day preschool. It would have made it much easier for them to do all the curriculum they wanted without feeling rushed, and I think he might have made more progress with his therapies if he'd had more time. They had a lot of problems with him trying to adjust and transition with the schedule here, and I think that if he'd had an all day program, it wouldn't have cut so much into their day if he did have a meltdown. PLUS, here, since they don't go all day, the district only provides transportation one-way because they don't have drivers in the middle of the day. So, they picked up morning kids and dropped off afternoon kids, but you were responsible for transportation in the other direction. And that was a total PITA for a lot of parents. And it would have made it much easier for me to find a job if I didn't have to worry about the weird daycare schedule. Nobody wants to provide full-time special needs care here.

Re: all day kindergarten?
a lot of children do really well with all day kindergarten. Its a huge adjustment I think at first, but I think its good for them at the same time. I really wish that more of the schools here would do all day kindergarten, but only a handful do
