LOS ANGELES - George Carlin, the dean of counterculture comedians whose biting insights on life and language were immortalized in his "Seven Words You Can Never Say On TV" routine, died of heart failure Sunday. He was 71.

The end of an era.

I don't know how many of the people here remember him as well as I do. Did you know hw was the very first guest host for SNL? (Saturday Night Live). His "7 Words" routine is hilarious, but at the time was extremely controversial and banned in many places. How many of you actually know what the 7 words are? My favorite skit he did is about a cat watching birds thru a plate glass window.

George Carlin was one of my favorite comedians - he was representative of an age. I can't believe he is gone. He will be greatly missed.

My husband and I are gutted, George Carlin was one of the greatest satirical minds of our century. So sad to hear of his passing last night.

I do not usually get sad over the deaths of celebs, but I loved Carlin. George and I both did. No matter how bad you feel you can always pop in one of his shows nad be laughing in no time. Yes he was filthy and rude but he wouldn't have been funny if he hadn't been. I think my favorite skit was what he said on voting. And I loved the cat/bird bit too.
He will be sorely missed in this world. At least he was someone who was not afraid to speak his mind.

Oh, I know them. I can recite parts of the bit, even.

Definitely a man who was never afraid to speak his mind, that's for sure. And even though he was filthy, he had a clean side, too - think Thomas theTank Engine. Who would've thought he could do a children's show??

A sad day, for sure.

I wasn't a big fan either, Liz. But he was a symbol to my generation. He was an icon back in the 80s. I can't believe he's gone. It's like a little bit of my teen/college years have gone with him.
