WASHINGTON (AP) — Four dollar a gallon gas has stolen a beach vacation in South Carolina from Julie Jacobs' family and exotic bath washes from Angela Crawford. Phil English had to sell his beloved but fuel-guzzling red pickup.

gas definately makes or breaks a day at the lake or a day at the house...

tomorrow in my province, a carbon tax kicks in. an extra 2.7 percent on gasoline and a huge jump in natural gas. my wonderful governments way to make us all thing and drive less and turn down the heat and stuff.

we are the first unfortunate province in all of north america to have a carbon tax. watch out for this one everyone

Re: 9 in 10 see rising gas prices causing family hardship

We are already seriously hurting. For June, I couldn't make my car payment or pay the electric bill. We are going to have to sell something to pay them. And it's only going to get worse. Starting next month, we will have no cable TV (I can live without it really) and no home phone (it's going to kill the kids). We are keeping the internet because I just don't see how we can function without it.

We are only watering the grass once a week now - it's already starting to turn brown. I have been really grocery shopping in almost 6 weeks - just buying what we have to have, like milk and bread. We are not using the dryer or oven or dishwasher much. Heck, I haven't used the oven in weeks and the dryer only twice recently (sorry, air drier undies are very uncomfortable! LOL!)

We are all making changes because we don't have a choice. Rick and I have talked about trying to sell the house, but I honestly don't think we will get what we owe. The market stinks right now. I've only driven my car once in the past week to save on gas. You do what you have to, but it sure would be nice to know there was some relief in sight. However, I seriously doubt prices will ever come back down.

Re: 9 in 10 see rising gas prices causing family hardship

I spoke to my Aunt this weekend. Even she is hurting and she's been a millionare for years! Well, not anymore. It must be hard for a woman who earned all that money herself to loose it all in her 70s when she needs it most.

We are okay. We are making the bills and scrimping by. We've had it much worse before. We aren't into Ramen Noodles and bean dinners everyday land yet.

Andrea...

Our gas tax is 36 cents a gallon. (One of the 10 highest in the country.) The governor put a moritorium on it, but the highway department wanted to increase the gas tax by another $1. They are all whiney about money because people are staying home and not buying gas.

The governor said we already have higher gas tax than all the states around us and a $1 more would kill our tourism industry. He said people are already having to choose between gas and rent and food.

Plus some stole a half tank of gas from us this weekend. Yes, we drive the smallest, most fuel efficent SUV they make, but it doesn't mean we are made of money! We are concerned if we put on a locking gas cap, they will just drill a hole in the tank. It's already happened to the landlord's maitenance vehicle. I told dh, let's just keep barely any gas in the car.

Sorry, this is a book. Needed to vent about getting robbed.

Re: 9 in 10 see rising gas prices causing family hardship

While I haven't had to give up my exotic bath soap , we are definitely feeling the crunch with rising gas prices. I used to drive between Ohio and NC 5 or 6 times a year and so far have done it once this year. I miss my family and friends but it takes 4 tanks of gas to make the trip there and back ... I don't have that kind of money.
Thankfully, I live in a very small town and INCLUDING taking my kids to the babysitter's house don't drive 5 miles round trip per day.

Re: 9 in 10 see rising gas prices causing family hardship

I totally agree. We spend twice as much in gas as we used to, and I'm not working. So, we're both driving much less.

Those are taxes per gallon. For my state, we pay over 50 cents tax per gallon on top of federal taxes.

Re: 9 in 10 see rising gas prices causing family hardship

Thanks! I knew we paid a lot of taxes on gas. The Highway Dept. wanted to increase state taxes to $1 a gallon because people aren't driving. Seems to me like, if people aren't driving then the wear and tear on the roads should be a whole lot less. They shouldn't need so much money for repairs of what isn't broken.
