cleaning a mattress

so, it is 430am and i am awake and cranky.

Logan ( who has not peed the bed in months) decided to have a flood on his bed. so much pee that it soaked through the protective pad that i was so happy to see he peed on.... just to find a yellow stain in his brand new matress.

so, here i sit with my son in my bed, laundry going and an unmade bed.

i don't want the matress to have a permenant smell. or stain, how do i take care of this??

i wish it was the old days and someone would actually be awake at this time of night!

Re: cleaning a mattress

I would take some Resolve carpet cleaner and if you have a shampooer just shampoo it..
If not just scrub it with the Resolve (it's in a Red handheld squirt bottle at the grocery store) and some old rags, put a fan on it and let it dry out.

Re: cleaning a mattress

I've never actually had to remove urine stains from a mattress but I've had a lot of luck removing cordial stains etc from carpet and clothes with good old fashioned baking soda. The advantage to baking soda is it is usually available in the kitchen when these things happen.

I sprinkled the stain with LOTS of baking soda, covered it with a towel and then piled on heaps of books (heavy hard cover ones) to help the cordial (or in this case urine) soak up into the towel. If he urinated that much you may need to replace (or reposition) the towel so it will not become to damp to be absorbant. The good thing about baking soda is that it is also a deoderiser so it should absorb the smell as well.

If that isn't suitable, I don't suppose you have a near by supermarket you can go and hire a carpet shampoo machine from and give it a good going over with that.

As long as you catch it before it has a chance to dry (and it sounds like you have done that) you should be able to clean it and remove the stain and odour OK, even if you just use a scrubbing brush and warm soapy water, at least it is summer over there and you should be able to dry the mattress quickly when you have it clean.

Good Luck Hun

unfortunately, it will probably be dry when logan wakes up.

i will see about borrowing a carpet cleaner, i hadn't thought about that. this just frustrates me soooo much.
and why is it, that they make matresses white now a days anyhow?

Re: cleaning a mattress

My GF in the past always has said for me to use original shaving cream in can like: barbosol sp???

You spray it directly on the stain and leave it until the foam has gone away and then vacuum. I've never used this method but.....

Re: cleaning a mattress

Be careful with using a carpet shampooer on a a mattress. Ifyou get too much water in the mattress, you will end up with mold in a few months. Did that myself once and ended up having to toss a perfectly good mattress!

You should be able to just blot up the worst of it. Then use baking soda - al ot of baking soda - on the spot. When it's dry, vacuum. Worst case scenario - put the mattress outside where the sun can get to it. Sunshine is the best deodorizer known to man!

Re: cleaning a mattress

We've used Arm and Hammer Pet Foam Spray when our puppy peed on the bed. I don't know if it takes out stains. But you said he has a brand new mattress and the protective pad was on it. I know with our new bed that if the protective pad is on and something goes through it, you just call and they send someone out to clean it. It's covered under warranty.
