Bee sting ?

Hey Kim,
My kids were going in the sprinkler a few minutes ago and Meghan started SCREAMING that she got stung by a bee. I checked her arm and sure enough she has a bee sting ( no stinger seen ) bite. My question is-- since this the first time what should I look out for as far as any symptoms? I am only asking because she has allergies and since she has never been bitten before I do not know if she has anallergy to bees. I put ice on it and I do not see any redness.

Thanks for the help

Re: Bee sting ?

to be on the safe side, you could give her a shot of childrens benylyn? or whatever allergy stuff you might have around. if she isn't having a huge reaction within a couple of hours i bet she is not horribly allergic

my dh got stung a week ago, he is allergic, not deathly though, he came inside and took an anehistemine (sp) and his arm still swelled up a bit, nothing too bad.

i hope she is ok

Re: Bee sting ?

Thanks, Andrea!
She is sneezing a lot and her eyes are a bit watery ( could be from the crying though) I just checked and am OUT of benadryl!!! Going to see if a neighbor has any -if not then I will go to walmart and get some.

Re: Bee sting ?

Personally, I would just ice it and watch her. You could have some benedryl on hand, but why give it for a local reaction? If her breathing is fine and she isn't broken out in hives, you will probably see just a local reaction, such as redness and swelling. If there is a stinger there, pull it out with tweezers.
Maybe I'm just old school, but if there are no more symptoms than a mosquito bite, then I wouldn't be worried.

If you notice at any time that she is having breathing problems, get help ASAP.

I will find some more info for you.

Re: Bee sting ?

Thanks Kim! those are some good sites!

let me tell you, al has always told me he is allergic to bees and when he got stung. i had a hard time, later on anyhow, not laughing at him, he had just a normal reaction of swelling and pain. although he did take an allergy pill right away.

Men! Go figure, eh? Whatever works and keeps him happy.

Re: Bee sting ?

Has anyone tried to benedryl cream? The topical stuff might be a better alternative to the systemic stuff and it should bring some pretty quick relief to the site itself.

Just a thought!

Re: Bee sting ?

They have those sting kits out at Walmart now. I don't know how well they work though. My dh is allergic to bee stings, but not terminally so. He gets a rather large swelling at the site and has some minor breathing problems. Luckily, he seldom gets stung. We have this stuff that is a two part treatment for poison ivy/oak/sumack that works really well.

I am not allergic and for some reason after the initial pain, honey bee stings just itch for me. Wasp and bumble bee stings are another matter. They hurt!

Re: Bee sting ?

I am allergic (breathing problems) but find that taking 2 Benadryl right away, using the Benadryl topical (for the rash that will come) and icing it usually works. However, I was told that the more often you are stung, the worse your reactions will get if you are allergic, so I really try to avoid them. I don't want to take a trip to the ER. The topical does help if you have a rash. If you can't get enough relieft from that, try an oatmeal pultice. Just add enough water to some Aveeno Oatmeal Bath stuff to make a paste. Spread that over the sting and cover with gauze. It helps alot.

Re: Bee sting ?

Hey Brenda, with respiratory issues, do you have an epi pen on hand?
