Traveling with a 2 yr old

I need some help.

We are going to driving this year for vacation. It's about a 12 hrs trip we are figuring we will make it a 2 day trip. At least the way up since we aren't leaving till like 5:00 at night.

But my question is how do I keep a 2 year old happy for the long. We are borrowing a DVD player, but my son isn't even big on watching TV. I have some books, his little laptop but what else can I do?

Re: Traveling with a 2 yr old

Hm, that's toughie. When I flew from CA to VA with my then-3-year-old son, I got him a large zippered binder. The pockets got filled with crayons, and I printed out coloring pages and three-hole-punched them for the inside. That and some small snacks got him through the two flights.

I'd definitely suggest some movies for the DVD player, some coloring stuff, maybe some small games. Plan on someone sitting in the back seat with him periodically - you can play "I Spy" with the passing scenery, or color together, even.

Take a couple of outdoor toys too, and stop frequently at rest stops to play (and rest!). It does slow you down on your travel, but it does wonders for your sanity.

Judy has some great suggestions! I find that traveling at night is better because the kids tend to sleep most of the way and you don't have to make as many "pit stops" for them to stretch their legs. But if you know your route, sometimes it helps to look places up and the internet and see if there are any interesting places to stop. It would be hard with a 2yo, but it can't hurt to look.
