This afternoon, Kyle went outside, and he noticed that Dylan was not running around. Then he heard a yelp. Dylan's hind legs had given out on him. He could not stand up. We took him to an emergency vet. They were so nice. The doctor said that given Dylan's age (he just turned 13 on Sunday), it could be cancer (most likely bone cancer), but that he knew for sure that he didn't have broken legs. The doctor said that Dylan's muscles were basically gone. He did say that we could do treatments (a series and combination of shots and pills), but given Dylan's age, he could not assure us of how quickly we would see results, if at all. He told us Dylan was in a lot of pain.
So, we made the heartbreaking decision to euthanize him. We spent some time with him beforehand, hugging and kissing and petting him and telling him what a wonderful dog he was. And he was a wonderful dog. So gentle. He was half Rottweiler and half German Shepherd and a big dog, and so many times people would hear about what kind of dog he was and see his size and think he would be aggressive, but then they would find out he was the world's biggest lap dog. He was so gentle and loving and just so meek and sweet. He was so good with the kids, never snapped or growled or even acted put out with them. So patient, and he followed the kids all over the yard, like he was gaurding them. He was my baby. He would sit in my lap, and even if he couldn't sit in my lap, he ALWAYS had to be touching me in some way, sitting on my feet or his head on my lap or something. He was just fabulous and precious. I will miss him. We are having him cremated. We bought a cherry urn with a picture frame on the front and a brass plate that will read: Dylan 1995-2008.
He passed peacefully in my arms with me telling him I loved him. Kyle was petting him. We were both
The vet was so kind. He kept saying he was sorry, and even he was petting Dylan and telling us how incredibly sweet he is.
God Bless you my Dylan dog. I love you and I'll miss you always.
