OMG wth?

I am sooo frustrated right now. Duncan is in the 5th grade. He is also in the Gifted and Talented program. We are with ConnectionsAcademy, and online charter school. This .. is his math homework .. today..

5th grade.. 9 yrs old...

Tickets for a school play sell for $8 for florr seats and $6 for balcony seats. For one performance 72 tickets were sold, bringing in $516 How many of each are sold?

I had George help.. and then I called his math teacher.. here is the work..

y= floor seats

8y + (6 * 72-y) = 516
8y + (432 -6y) = 516
2y +

anyway.. the answer comes out to be y=42 so 42 floor and 30 balcony.
I didn't do this math until HIGH SCHOOL

Re: OMG wth?

OMG! that's like second semester first year algebra! Can't they test him to see where he falls in each subject? I mean, I know home school is usually more advanced than public school, so I would think they'd tested his public school knowledge.

Re: OMG wth?

Wow! That's definitely advanced for 5th grade.

Re: OMG wth?

If they are working on "working backwards on problems in class" then it isn't too difficult. It depends what they are working on class. If is just a random assignment then it's ridiculus for 5th grade. It depends what they worked up to.

Re: OMG wth?

He is more or less homeschooled. You would have to look at www.connectionsacademy.com to understand. And the lesson right before this one was multiplying and dividing decimals.

Re: OMG wth?

I don't see anything that would lead me to believe they have been building up to this math. His last lesson was multiplying and dividing decimals. the one before that was estimating.

Re: OMG wth?

I have done fairly well with all of his other subjects, but I've always known my weakness was in math. George's strength is math.. and HE couldn't get that word problem until the teacher explained it LOL. I am just so glad that I am not the one coming up with the curriculum and trying to teach it all. This is pretty much really easy for me to do, well.. other than THIS.

Re: OMG wth?

Britt is entering 5th this Tuesday. She did touch on the Algerbra this past spring and that is usually a precursor to what they will be doing this year.

I know 9th grade I had pre-algerbra and that summer I had to take it in summer school again and then algerbra. I was glad to move on to geometry.

Re: OMG wth?

Drew had stuff like this in 5th grade. I was stumped! Even Rick had some troubles and he excelled at math. Like you, we had to call the teacher. And Drew was in regular classes.
