Working while pregnant

I have had a pretty rough pregnancy so far... I am so exhausted after doing the littlest things, I have extremely strong food adversions, food cravings, nausea, vomitting, dizziness. Basically if my body had it it's way, I'd be resting all day. B/c of this I have missed 5 work days this month, and on top of that I have had 4 Dr.'s appointments. I really didn't feel up to working today but I went in anyway b/c my boss pretty much told me that she was going to cut my job down to part time if I don't come in. She also asked if I was going to be able to work through this pregnancy. I feel like that is such a b*#$hy thing to do and well, that is my boss. I really can't stand her and she sucks at communicating. She is also trying to get me to tell all of my co-workers that I am pregnant and I told her that I don't want to until I am 12 - 13 weeks and she rolled her eyes and said you may want to reconsider b/c people are upset that I am missing time. She is also asking me if I am going to work after the baby. I really don't feel comfortable answering that question yet.

I feel like I don't know what to do now. My plan is to stop working once I have the baby but I would like to /need to earn as much as I can before the baby comes. I also don't want to push myself too much especially since I had a previous miscarriage but I am just really confused as to what to do.

Does anyone have any advice or have you gone through a similar experience?

Thanks for any help, I really appreciate it.

Re: Working while pregnant

The pregnancy with my second son was horrible.
Aside from being in the hospital twice, on so many different medications, my Mother passing away, and working full time, and having a 4 year old at home, I seemed to get thru it.
I threw up constantly.
At one point I didn't eat for almost a month. I craved food, I dreamed about food, and I cried because I couldn't eat. (Thats when I was in the hospital the first time)
I lost 44 pounds with that pregnancy.

Early on is the worst, it's when you're the most tired. Once you move into your second trimester, things should look up for you.

Good luck!!

Re: Working while pregnant

I had a rough first trimester with my first pregnancy ... I would get severe dizzy spells and nausia and ended up calling out off work or going home sick often. It got better though and I was able to work up until a week before I delivered.
I would tell your boss just that ... that first trimesters are hard and that it isn't any indication that you aren't going to be able to work through the pregnancy. Let her know that when and how you tell your fellow coworkers is a personal decision and you trust that once you are ready to tell them, they will understand the need for the sick days you've taken. I personally think it's pretty b*tchy of her to cause a fuss over it ... does the woman not have any kids?
As for your decision not to work after the baby is born ... don't let on yet. If she presses, tell her that you're still getting used to the idea of being pregnant and that you haven't had a chance to think very far into what you are going to do once the baby is here. It's really none of her business at this point as long as you give a decent notice before you actually do leave.

Re: Working while pregnant

I'm a working full time mom and worked during both of my pregnancies. All pregnancies are different and all people. After the first trimester you should begin to feel better. I wouldn't be to hastly to make a decision right now about not working through. If you have planned on using FMLA "Family Medical Leave Act" with short term disability. Most work policies are:

You must return to work for 30 days after Short Term and FMLA to be covered completely for your time off. I was home 12 weeks with my son and only 6 weeks with my daughter and got paid a total of 6k dollars while off with my children that was worth returning tor work.

I hope you begin to feel better....

Re: Working while pregnant

Thanks everyone for the advice! I have decided to listen to my body and not push myself too much. Which basically translates to me doing nothing. I have missed several days of work recently and at this point I don't care what my boss decides to do about my absences. Working at this job has always made me unhappy and extremely stressed - it just is a lot worse now that I am feeling sick, tired and hormonal!

I think it is good to work during pregnancy but if the pregnancy has been a healthy pregnancy then you should stop working 2 to 3 weeks before your baby is due. Another way to tell when you should stop working is if you are uncomfortable all the time, this usually happens a couple days before the birth.
