I was told a person cannot get a sterization surgery done at a Catholic Hospital. Is this true?

Re: Is this true?

I am Catholic, and sterilization is a mortal sin. I wouldn't think you could get sterilization done at a Catholic hospital, but I am not 100% certain.

Re: Is this true?

I was going to say the same thing as Heather, except I wasn't going to say I am Catholic, but the rest was what I planned to say! I am pretty sure it's true.

Re: Is this true?

We had a Cathloic hospital in my area, and because of this situation, the baby ward moved to a non-Cathloic hospital, so everything that had to do with reporduction would be done there, and not have to move the mother, and babie(s) to another hospital or even seperate the two.

Re: Is this true?

I do not believe that can be done at a Catholoic Hospital.
When I worked in the pharmacy, their insurances wouldn't even cover birth control pills.

From time to time we'd even have Priests that knew that our head Rph was Catholic corner her and tell her that she's committing a mortal sin by dispensing birth control pills. It was scary!

Wow, then I guess I am really going to hell. I've been sterilized and used bc for years.

Re: Is this true?

Yep. It's true. I had the kiddos at a Catholic hospital and they won't do tubals or any sort of BC and they are really funny with anything to do with infertility.

Re: Is this true?

I was going to say the same as Kimmer. When I worked at a Catholic hospital they would not do Tubals or dispense birth control unless it was a medical neccesity. For example, my insurance covered my BC but only because without it I wouldn't have a period. I had to go through many many hoops to get it covered by the insurance, and I couldn't get it filled at the hospital pharmacy I had to go to WalGreens. They did occasionally do tubals there, but it was only in cases where the mother's life would be at risk from a pregnancy.

Re: Is this true?

Both of my kids were born at Christus St, Joseph's here in Houston. It's true - Catholic hospitals will not do any type of sterilization unless it can be medically proven to be absolutely necessary. You must exhaust all out routes first. Nor will they write Rx or dispense Rx for any type of birth control unless it is for the same reason. And Rx must be filled at a different pharmacy. They also do not allow circumcision (my OB did Drew's at my 2 week appt in his office operating room). They would not even consider the surgery that Ally might have had to have (her labia lips were growing together). Flat out told me that I would have to go to another hospital for that as it was against hospital/church policy.

But I do have to say that they were very nice and polite when explaining all of this to us. Not pushy or making us feel like were were "sinners", just letting us know that the hospital/church policy forbade certain procedures. It was all outlined in the paperwork they sent to before Drew was born. They went over it all when we did our visit.
