The Dow Jones seems to be dropping everyday. Bank of America bought out Merril Lynch. The Lehmen Brothers firm is declaring bankrupcy. WaMu is considering a merger to stay afloat. American Insurers Group just got bailed out to the tune of $85 billion. Are you keeping track of the business news? Are you concerned about the market?

Re: Are you concerned about the stock market?
As a historian of the Great Depression, the market is very interesting to me at this time, because it was the stock market crash that led to the Depression. Also, it's just like watching a hurricane. It could hit hard or it could dissipate.A part of me is concerned about how this is going to effect all the little people. The callus part of me says these super wealthy people most effected didn't care much when the little people were loosing their homes. They didn't care how hard the little people had it as long as they had it good. Well, now it's their turn to feel the pain everyone else has been feeling for the last year. People pay isurance premiums for years and years, so if something happens, they are covered. Then the government just absolves the insurance companies of all debts incurred by natural disasters, so they don't have to pay anything and the little people are left holding the bag. Unfortunately, when giants fall, they land on everyone.
I feel for people who have their whole pension tied up in the market.
I spoke to an older man whom fears Social Security will start investing in the stock market and loose their shirt. I have bad news. I am pretty sure the government already invests the money people pay into SS in the stock market. This is not actual knowledge. This is based on the fact my mother was an investment for the Kansas Retirement Fund for ten years and they invested heavily in the market. To answer my own question, yes, I am very concerned about how erratic the market is lately. Also the word panic keeps coming up in regards to the market. That's concerning. On the other hand, I understand the market is all based on confidence. If confidence goes up, so will the market. It's all one big crap game anywho as they say.

Maybe I'm naive but since I don't feel the stress on the stock market down here at poverty level, I tend to not even think about it.- Grace

Re: Are you concerned about the stock market?
Rumors that the government is going to buy out a lot of this real estate debt seem to have stablized the market for now. However, that is a bit on the communist side. Not socialism, but communism where the state owns everything. Well, the state is going to own an awful lot of the financial market, if this happens. So where is our government, who is highly in debt itself, going to come up with all the billions required to do this huge buy out?And to think people were scared of socialized medicine because that was "too communist". Well, this is a lot closer to communism than a little socialized medicine ever was and everyone (On the top at least) is comfortable with this. It just goes to show, it's a funny old world.

I'm sure it would work if I had the updated version of Flash.
Long story short, the company we bought this computer from is no longer providing patches for upgrades.
I'll try to find a print version. Thanks anyway, Kim.

Gov't rushing to finish huge financial rescue planhttp://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080919/...WUlVCh0COs0NUE
This is concerning:
Quote:| Later Dodd (Chairman of the Senate Banking Committee, Chris Dodd, D-Conn) told reporters that the government's rescue plan will be costly, and demanded more details. "We're anxious to hear the specifics. None of us have any idea what the details are. We understand the gravity of the moment," he said. predicted the new bailout plan would cost at least half a trillion dollars. |
Quote:| Rep. Roy Blunt, the No. 2 GOP leader in the House, suggested the rescue can be handled without a tax increase. "It doesn't necessarily have to be something that impacts taxpayers in a negative way," said Blunt, R-Mo. "It all depends on how you put that structure together." |

Re: Are you concerned about the stock market?
I vnvest my TSA very aggresively so most o it is in stocks and not insured. I'm in it for the long run so I'm not that concerned. Buy outs and over all panic with people pulling out of the market does more harm than good. Talk of reinvesting in bonds and such is what makes the market do worse and scares more people into pulling out. Most people don't have that much invested in stocks anyway. Why get all upset? Just ride it out and stay in it for the long haul and see what happens.I pray I never need the money and I can leave it to my kids anyway. ;-)

Re: Are you concerned about the stock market?
Honestly, I tend not to think much about it. It wouldn't do any good to worry. Rick's TSP is mostly invested in the stock market, but since we don't "see" that money every paycheck, I don't think about it.

Re: Are you concerned about the stock market?
I'm not worried in the least bit. As a matter of fact, I rarely think of the recession. Where attention goes, energy flows - I find that when I focus on only positive things, my life responds by bringing me lots of the same - including financial security.
