Feeding an older baby

I am still breastfeeding my youngest boy, Rory who is now 18 months old. I am getting many questions on when I am going to wean him. I am really starting to get sick of those questions. I would like to know what you think when you see someone feeding an older baby.

To me, Rory is still a baby and he is little in size and weight. So I think that by me still feeding him he is at least getting some goodness.

We have some concerns with Rory's eating habits but these are being looked into by the hospital. So far no joy. Because he is putting on just a little bit of weight each visit they say he is fine. Each time I think of weaning him I wonder just how he will do because he won't drink milk at all.

Please give me your comments!

Breastfeeding for a long time is a personal choice. I just wanted to know if you have tried Soy milk or maybe even Goat's milk??

I see nothing wrong with BF other kids...and we have many mother here who do or have or will.

Good luck to you in what ever you choose.

Hi Tans and welcome to BabyU!
WTG FOR BREASTFEEDING YOUR SON FOR 18MO!! YOU GO GIRL!
I am currently breastfeeding my 17mo old daughter so obviously i see nothing wrong with extended breastfeeding. I use the nurse by demand system where i only nurse her if she asks me to...i never offer it to her. I too, think that extended breastfeeding is a personal choice and you should not feel badgered by people to stop early just because they are misinformed on the benefits of extended breastfeeding. We have several links here on the breastfeeding boards about the physical and mental benefits of extended breastfeeding on your child. You should really check them out if you have the time. If you can't find them then just let me know and i will post the links for you.
My daughter, Emily, doesn't really care for milk either unless it is chocolate. But her favorite foods are cheese and pudding so i never worry about her consuming enough dairy products. How is your baby at eatting solids? How often is he breastfeeding? Some children are smaller just by nature. My daughter was a preemie so she has always been small for her age. She looks to be around 11-12mo old instead of 17mo. *shrug* Who cares as long as they are healthy and gaining weight well. Try not to worry too much. Hard to do, i know, but if he is gaining consistantly then i wouldn't worry.
Good luck and let me know how it is going.
Hope to see you around on the boards a lot more
Yours,
Krista

Thanks Krista, it really makes a difference to hear someone elses views on the matter.

Rory is only breastfeed when he wants it which is usually morning, and mostly at night. He doesn't eat an awful lot but I try not to worry about it to much.

Aren't you the luckly one, going away without the kids with your husband. Something me and mine haven't ever been able to do. Who would look after 4 boys. Have a wonderful time.

Hi Tania
Glad that i could be of some help. That is what i love about Babyu, you can always find someone to help or offer their advice.
I hope that you visit here often.

I really can't believe that my hubby and i are actually getting 'away' for the weekend either!LOL! I pawned off two of my children with my Mom and then my MIL is taking my other son. Thank goodness for grandparents! I hope that you and your DH get a weekend away soon.
Take care and i hope to talk with you again soon

Way to go!

I always admire women who are able to breastfeed their child for an extended period of time! It doesn't matter what anyone else thinks about what you do with your child....it's no one elses business!

Sorry I am late to posting to this message. I am currently nursing our 7 month old and plan to do so as long as he wants to! It is truly YOUR decision. Not anybody elses! I hope that in another year.... Kale and I will still be going strong at it too! It sounds like your wee one is gaining weight and eating other foods fine .. so I would not worry. Like Krista said thought ... it's hard not to worry! I recently have had lots of medical problems and many different tests and surgery .... And we never missed a feeding!!!! So I figure that something I've worked this hard at ... I'm not giving up just because of someone else's opinion!! LOL
