Labor is painful, but it is worth it.

Re: Birth stories?

A lot of people go on as if labor is the worst pain ever and it is painful, but so is a herniated disc or gallbladder problems. However, labor is only for a short duration. Even the person who has had a c-section is normally much better in a couple of weeks. I've had two c-sections, so I know what I am talking about.

I don't know if I would say it is the worst pain ever, because pain is pain. However, after labor, there is a wonderful new person in the world. That makes all the difference. Also, there are a variety of drugs and breathing/meditation techniques to help relieve and reduce the pain. This isn't some warrior contest where a person has to "make brave", so if you feel you need the drugs, by all means take them. No one will think any less of you for it - at least not here.

Everyone (Well almost everyone) loves to tell a story and stories are wonderful, but don't let them scare you. Giving birth really is a joyous and wonderful thing even if it doesn't seem so at the time. Don't be too scared. We are here for you.

Lenora, I love your philosophical side!
I agree that having your beautiful baby at the end makes it all worth it. And I also agree with this:

Amen!
For me, labor was the worst pain ever. However, I am a wimp and I readily admit that fact! I do believe that some people don't experience a lot of pain with labor and childbirth because it's a different experience fo everyone, and we all have different tolerances for pain, too.

Re: Birth stories?

I saw my uncle shortly after a quadruple bypass. Now, that looked pretty dang painful. My grandpa had lung cancer. He had a lung and 1/4 removed. That looked dam* painful, too. When I compare it with those things, I think labor and childbirth (and I did have 39 hours of hard labor before my first c-section) weren't so bad. Heck, I saw my uncle about a month after his heart surgery and he was still using his heart pillow and barely able to move around! Even after my c-sections, a month later I was moving around pretty well and basically pain free.

Re: Birth stories?

Don't get me wrong, I am not saying that it's the worst pain ANYONE'S EVER felt, I am saying it was the worst pain I have ever felt. I am sure there is worse pain. I did not have an easy recovery from my first c-section. It took a good six months for me to start feeling okay again. The second c-section was a much easier recovery.

Re: Birth stories?

I thought labor was the worst pain I'd ever felt (and I did both of mine naturally) but after I had breat reconstruction THAT was the worst pain I've ever felt. Couldn't even wipe my own hiney after I went potty, thats bad!

But, they don't call it "labor" for nothin'!
It doesn't last forever.. plus if it was THAT bad, nobody would have babies.

Do you ladies think it's true that you kind of forget about how bad the pain is/was?

Re: Birth stories?

I think that's true of any positive pain. Over 20 years ago, I had my jaw surgically broken and 7 mm removed from each side. I understand now, this is a nine hour surgery. Then, I just went to sleep and woke up in ICU. Honestly, I don't remember it being that bad. My dad remembers my pain better than I do. I was having a lot of problems because of my jaw. Over 20 years of being able to eat any food I like without having to estimate how much chewing is required has really mitigated the pain I felt then.

When people ask me now if I would do it again, I say "absolutely". The same is true for childbirth. It can be rough, but most of us would do it again or have done it again. I don't think it's that we forget, but more the results are so worth it, it makes it seem not so bad.

Re: Birth stories?

Robyn! I could not wipe my own hiney after my first c-section. There were complications during labor, and then I could not lift my right leg properly for about a year. I am still limited in how high I can lift it.

Re: Birth stories?

MizLovely, please remember most women are home within a few days of giving birth, often the next day, and cleared to work out and resume all normal activity in 6 weeks. Some women are back to their old selves almost immediately.

Re: Birth stories?

I used to think labor was the worst pain in the world. Then I got gallstones. THAT hurt worse than any labor pain I ever had. And I hear that kidney stones are much worse. But the thing is, even tho I remember the pain and how bad it was, I don't think about it too much.
