Why does this stuff make the news?

A pic of a fashion model with a diaper with weeds sticking out of it on her head.
Is this in case she's in need of a weed bouquet and a diaper at the same time?

A pic of Sarah Palin's shoes at the VP debate. Okay, where is the photo of Senator Biden's shoes? I always choose candidates by their footwear. I think Sen. Joe should complain. It's totally unfair. how can he reach the shoe obsessed voter when his shoes are not in the headlines as well?

I don't know why that weed diaper thing made the news, but I do love Governor Palin's shoes!

Re: Why does this stuff make the news?

If the country is ever in desperate need of footwear advice, she's our gal. My annoyance is they would never focus on a man's attire as intensely as they do women's. My own dear Senator Rockafeller is a well dressed man, but his hair (what little of it there is) has it's own agenda. I wish the media would get beyond politicans making funny faces and their clothes. The President and VP are very serious positions. There was nothing more important on the agenda at the debate than her shoes?

I have seen more pictures of Gov. Palin in a bathing suit than I have ever seen of any candidate before. She was a beauty queen and she looks very nice, but, personally, beauty and nice shoes are not what I am electing someone for. Besides, if a bathing suit competion for political candidates is going to be part of the process, count me out.

Bob Byrd in swimming trunks? Dick Cheney in a Speedo?

Re: Why does this stuff make the news?

In some ways I definitely agree with you Lenora ... for the campaign, focus on the issues that make this person a good candidate for Pres/VP/whoever ... how good you look in a bathing suit is definitely not going to sway my decision one way or another.
In another way, I find pictures like that very interesting.
To me the picture of the trendy red highheels standing at the podium is a great way to portray the feelings around this spunky, younger woman, running for a major office in our country. It's one of those pictures that I'll look at in 30 years in an addition of People magazine's Best Pictures and really remember the excitement around this election.

Re: Why does this stuff make the news?

Let's face it, there are people who will see the picture of Palin's shoes for what it's worth, and there are people who won't. The people who do realize that this is an interesting picture (much in the way Elaine described it), will leave it at that, and move forward and do their research elsewhere and decide which candidate to vote for based on other reasons.
The fact that the media focuses on her attire and her glasses (which are designer and expensive) doesn't surprise me. I see it as their typical way of picking apart a woman. I don't recall them doing this with Hillary when she was running, but it's irrelevant to me. I don't pay much attention to the media when it comes to stuff like this.

Re: Why does this stuff make the news?

Oh yes, Hilary got it just as bad if not worst. There were dozens upon dozens of photos of her making funny faces and comments about her "thunder thighs" and "woman in the pants suit". And lest we forget, the Hilary Clinton "nutcracker". No male politican faces this kind of harassment. No male candidate is ever called a "bull dike" for being strong and determined like Hilary was when she was running.

It just lets people know how far women have yet to go to be equal in the political realm.

This is fashion? I think not! If I ever started dressing like that, I would either be commited or arrested!
