WASHINGTON - After consulting with Barack Obama, Democratic leaders are likely to call Congress back to work after the election in hopes of passing legislation that would include extended jobless benefits, money for food stamps and possibly a tax rebate, officials said Saturday.

IMO, that's more like it!

Re: Tax rebate, food stamp money possible in aid plan

IF I didn't know for a fact that there are people right here in my home town that have yet to even try to get a new job "because my unemployment hasn't run out", I would be all for extending aid. I personally can't stand to see how it along with all forms of aid are missused.

I seriously find it hard to believe that people can not find "some" job. Althoug it might not be their dream job there are jobs out there. I think extending umemployment is not the answer like Eliane stated it leads to misuse which is already happening.

It depends on where you live, Abby. If a person can't afford to drive and lives in a smaller town, it can be very difficult to get a new job when the place someone works for closes. Actually, the part of the package that interested me was the creation of new jobs. I read somewhere else, I can't remember where, Obama is talking about bringing manufacturing back to America. That would be good. Products used to be made here and they lasted. We made high quality stuff. Now, we are forced to buy low quality things for the same price!

I would love to buy a pair of good ole made in the USA shoes. Remember (those of us who are a little older) before the 90s, when shoes were made in the USA and they lasted for years?

I know it doesn't affect me, but i tend to disagree that extending unemployment benifets is more a hinderance than a help

Re: Tax rebate, food stamp money possible in aid plan

Where I live I see both worlds..I live in (I think we still are) the wealthiest county in the country or one of and I work in one of the poorest. I know people who live in $800,000 house who apply for reduced lunch for their kids. Then on the other hand I have people who send their kids to the same daycare that I send Noah (in the city I work) who are getting subsidized and are not working, haven't working in the past 4 years that I've been sending my kids there. I can't figure out how they do it. I think I'm just frustrated that i work everyday and get no help and pay full price for everything while there are people who are excited about unemployment benefits.

KWYM, I have never understood not working and sending your kids to daycare. It's hard to believe people can be on unemployment for four years. Isn't there any accountability? I was on unemployment for a month in Texas and I had to go into job corp every week and apply for jobs.

I feel the same as Elaine. These tax rebates are wonderful but I just don't think it is fair. I mean my neighbors who know how to work the system brought home more than my family did in the stimulus checks. And that was unfair because they don't work, she won't let her husband get a job that has any type of benefit because she doesn't want to pay for health insurance. If you don't try, and have no reason why you can't get out there and work then you should get no tax break or rebate.

Re: Tax rebate, food stamp money possible in aid plan

I see this extension as a help for us. I am trying to go back to school in January. There is really no way for me to find a decent job in the market right now, as I am overqualified for most low wage jobs out there (managers have said this to me). I would require too high a starting wage compared to others.

We can't afford me to be a SAHM, as we need both our incomes. So unemployment will help me while I start at school and see if I can find a job on campus. Trust me... the past two years have not been easy, and I should have gone back to school earlier.

Thankfully Clint is behind me 150% on going back to school.

But this bill will NOT help those who ARE working and still struggling. People like all of us. We work and still can't pay bills because costs have risen so much. We work, yet have to do without becasue we can't afford. We work and cut back on everything, but still struggle to get by. (By we, I am meaning the general populace - middle class). This bill does NOTHING to help us.

Nor the country... Where are they going to get this $$? Just print more paper? Borrow more from China? Someone somewhere in Washington needs to realize that the government cannot do everything for everyone and stop the insane spending. Watch for inflation, think you have trouble now.....

I agree with you both. I would love to see another rebate check come to me but at what costs? And once that money is gone, who's gonna help those like me then? And where is the money going to come from and at what costs? I can't imagine what groceries and the like will cost then.
