storing breast milk

Ok, so I'm only 11 weeks along, but my hubby and I are talking about what we're going to do for baby. I'm going to breastfeed, but I'll also have to go back to work, so I'm going to pump. We want to avoid plastic as much as possible so we're going to use glass bottles for the expressed milk. My question is, does anyone have any experience freezing and reheating milk in glass containers? I don't know if I have to use tempered glass, or if any kind of glass container would work.

Re: storing breast milk

Any clean and sterile glass should be fine! Just remember to leave about an inch of space at the top of the container as the milk will expand as it is frozen. When reheating make sure you do it slowly ... I found that letting it thaw in the fridge and then heating slowly in a pot of water on the stove is best.

Re: storing breast milk

Also, store in smaller amounts so there isn't muc waste. It's bette to reheat a few smaller containers than one larger one nad have to throw some out. I HATED wasting any breast milk.

Re: storing breast milk

You'll want to heat expressed breast milk in a cup of hot water. Getting it too hot can destroy the good stuff in the milk. No microwave, no stove. if you want a couple of resources I am using now, let me know and I can PM them to you (as I am currently BFing my 2week old)

Re: storing breast milk

I always used my tap to reheat it was plenty hot. i just put a container in the sink and ran warm water over the frozen milk and it thawed very quickly. Or put it in the fridge if I had time ahead.

Re: storing breast milk

The NICU told us to do the same as Nikki. I tried to remember to put it in the fridge way ahead of time but when you start losing sleep you stop remembering...lol.

Re: storing breast milk

Glass continers are always better than plastic and if you are heating the milk, check for milk temperature on your hand before you give to your baby. Avoid microwave as it heats milk irregularly that is some hot spots and may damage the breast milk nutrients.

Re: storing breast milk

I think all moms here got the best answer. Always remember to sealed it on a clean and sterilized container. But of course you have to smell to before you will give it to your baby. Happy Breastfeeding!
