Fairy Wings - HELP!

Ally wants to be a fairy princess for Halloween. We took apart our camping pavillion this weekend and trashed it, but I had Rick take out the blue netting first, thinking I could use it to make her wings. I am thinking I can use light weight jewelry wire to make the wing shapes and cover them in the netting. But how do I attach it? I obviously can't glue it.

Also, how do I get them on her? She doesn't want the kind that have the straps you put over your arms and wear. Does this mean I have to sew them onto a costume? I really can't sew, but I'm willing to give it a shot. And yes, I have a sewing amchine, but not a clue how to use it.

And how do I join them all together in the center?

Re: Fairy Wings - HELP!

Jewelry wire might be too flimsy. Go ahead and try it, but if it doesn't work, I'd suggest a couple of wire coat hangers. As for attaching it, you probably could use glue, but I'd suggest whip-stitching it over the wire: fold the material over the wire, then whip-stitch around the wire, and through both pieces of fabric. Then glue over the wire (that's when you add glitter, if you want, too).

As for attaching it, you might find it easiest to just hand-stitch it to the back of whatever shirt she is going to wear. Remember to stitch it a bit higher than the wings should be, because the weight of them is going to pull down a little (and I'm sure she doesn't want wings on her )

Good luck!

Re: Fairy Wings - HELP!

I don't have ANY wire coat hangers, can you believe that? But Bill suggested this bendable plastic that molds like wire. It's very light weight and I can make whatever shape I need. I'm going to try Hobby Lobby to see if they have any.

Thanks, Judy, for the ideas! Whip-stitching I can do! LOL! And if I can't get it on her shirt, Rick DOES know how to sew and I can get him to do it. Love the glitter idea, too! She loves glitter! Now I just have to figure out what she is actually going to wear. Going to hit the thrift stores for leotards, stockings and tutus or some type of skirt.

Check at the thrift for wire hangers - you never know if they might let you keep a couple of them

Just get some pliable wire 24g maybe? I would have to
ask my
hubby what he got me. Nothing that will be to heavy.
Form your wings to what ever size and shape you would
like. Take another piece of wire wrap it around both
wings, where you
would bring them together and make a center to secure
them together. I then take a pretty good amount of hot
glue and glue it all together. Then all you do is get
a pair of nylons/tights. I use children's size
18/24,2t or a little bigger depending on how big the
wing size is and how stretchy
the nylons/tights are.

Re: Fairy Wings - HELP!

I think the felt was for the middle of the wings where you'd attach them to elastic to hook to the body.
