NJ flu-shot mandate for preschoolers draws outcry

As flu season approaches, many New Jersey parents are furious over a first-in-the-nation requirement that children get a flu shot in order to attend preschools and day-care centers. The decision should be the parents', not the state's, they contend.

This does not effect me in so many ways ( a. I don't live in New Jersey b. My kids are not in day care.) My dds are both allergic to eggs. One of them had a bad reaction to the flu shot, since they are pretty much rejecting medical reasons, that is very concerning.

So glad I am not in NJ, as I have egg sensitivities, and our ped supports the fact I don't want Bradley to have the flu vax. The two times I got it, I got SO sick, I don't want that to happen to him.

I don't get my kids the flu shot but I guess if it became a school requirement, I would have to. But, I don't like how choices are being taken away from parents. My monsters handle shots just fine but I know there are a lot of children who can't get them for whatever reason.

Mine swelled up like a balloon and puked like there was no tomorrow the last time she got a flu shot.

Don't get me wrong, my kids are up to date on all their shots and so are dh and I. But the flu shot is grown in raw eggs. I know other shots are grown in raw eggs ( and dh has a sevre problem with them, too), but the flu shot seems to cause more of a reaction than the others. I am not allergic to eggs and I'll be getting the shot the next time I am at the VA where I can get it free.

If the shot wasn't egg based, dh and the kids would be getting it. Except for dh, we have all had the pnemonia shot, too. He will be getting it as soon as I can force the issue while we are the VA.

I wonder if some people (like this woman) really understand vaccines. Vaccines just build up a person's immunity to a disease, it doesn't wipe out the disease or cause a person to have a weaker immune system. In fact, they reccommend the flu shot especially to people with weakened immune systems to help them withstand or prevent the full bore illness. Kim is the expert here. She can explain it much better than I can.

When her kids get sick, does she take them to the dr for antibotics?

I wonder if the spray is egg based and if not, where we can get it here. I know the VA just gives the shots.

I agree with you, Liz. I just don't like it that they are basically not accepting medical exceptions. Then again, I don't live in NJ and my kids are not in day care, so no worries about state enforced flu shots for me and my kids have had every other shot.

I really wish they would come up with a shot for stomach viruses. I hate them loads more than upper respiratory stuff. We carry hand santizers everywhere and use it constantly. I don't want to build up an immunity by getting loads of viruses!

Re: NJ flu-shot mandate for preschoolers draws outcry

My kids ped told me NOT to give them the flu shot until they were at least 3 years old because of the reactions amny smaller kids have. Unless it is medically necessary, I see no reason why these parents should be FORCED to give their kids something they don't think they need. Parents have the right to decide what goes into their children's bodies. But on the other hand, they must also be willing to live witht he consequences of thier decisions, which in this case means their kids can't go to pre-K or day-care.

State policy now allows for medical and religious exemptions to mandatory vaccinations, but Vandervalk said requests for medical exemptions often have been turned down by local health authorities. She said 19 other states allow conscientious exemptions like those envisioned in her bill.
It's not that they don't allow medical exemptions, I think it's more that many doctors don't want to give them. If you or your family have a medical history showing that you can't take the shot, then there should be no problem getting an exemption.

The kids and I will all be getting our shots on Monday when I take the kids back to the doctor for their check up. Rick will get one at work - his IS mandatory becasue he works in a hospital. Frankly, having had the flu, I would rather have the shot - and I hate needles!
