Need Curiculum Ideas

Can anyone suggest certain curiculums that they like? I need something that goes thru the HS level.

Drew has admitted that he is probably going to fail this semester, so I am getting prepared. I have found alot of and Lenora has posted some good ones as well. But I am looking for actual curiculums that will tell me what they should be studying at which grade and the specific areas we will need to work on within each subject.

Here is a link to the educational standards for the state of Texas all grades:

Check with your local school district to see if they will provide the circulum to you. My state requires the board of education provide all homeschooling families with all the textbooks and materials provided to public school children.

Re: Need Curiculum Ideas

If I have a parent that is concerned and I know is going to work with their child at home I have no problem ending home an extra textbook or materials. I have a girl (who happens to be my top student but struggles with math). I sent an extra math book home with her so she can stay one lesson ahead and familiarize herself with the vocab before we get to it and and go over the lesson we already did if she feels she "just didn't get it". Ask his teachers if they'd be willing to work with you if you're willing to work with him at home. I'd do it if I had extra materials, which you almost always do.

Email Sandra (premiespooh). She was a public school teacher and she homeschools in your state. She would be up on all aspects of this issue.

Re: Need Curiculum Ideas

Abby, they won't let Drew bring home an extra set of text books. They did provide them up thur grade 7, but starting in grade 8 they must use only the classroom textbooks. Weird, I know! At this point tho, it really doesn't matter. He will be homeschooled starting in the spring semester becasue he tells me he is failing. Obviously, the school can't help him because he needs someone to ride herd on him constantly to get shool work done. I have begged and pleaded to have him put into a controlled classroom, but they won't do it. Heck, it took me 3 years to get him into SpEd and now I wonder why I wasted my time. They won't give him the services he needs because there are other kids that need them more. They are only allowed to have "so many" SpEd kids per school (according to each schools total population) and within those in SpEd, those with the worst disabililties get preference. I understand that, but it's not fair to kids like Drew who really need that extra help to succeed. I'm tired of fighting with them. I've reported them to the state more times than I can count, but nothing ever happens.

K12 has 2 options in Texas. Texasd Virtual Academy only goes thur 8th grade, which is what he is in now. I need something where we can transition to HS. The other option is a private school, which we can't afford.

What search parameters did you use to find Duncan's school?

Re: Need Curiculum Ideas

I didn't search for it. I was told about it. I really wish you could get into CA, it's a wonderful program. Look for.. Virtual schools, Virtual Charter schools. Online charter schools. See what you come up with.

http://www.texasvirtualschool.com/ i cannot find on ther ewhere it says only to the 8th grade, it talks about early graduation and Harvard prizes.

You also have to take into account that most curriculums are going to run you a bit of money, unless you choose to make up your own curriculum and do a different kind of homeschooling. If you want to follow a set curriculum, tsome of them are expensive.
Good luck honey.

Nope, they won't. In Texas, homeschooling is considered a private school and they expect the parent to DO IT ALL. We get NO help fromt he state at all. In some ways that is good becasue we can homeschool howeer we like. It others it stinks becasue the burden of everything falls on the parent. For thiose just getting started (like me) it can be pretty ominious.

The link is useless, too. The only thing they have is a letter telling me that Texa homeschools are private schools (knew that already) and a bunch of other stuff that doesn't apply to homeschoolers. This is getting more and more difficult.

Re: Need Curiculum Ideas

There are a couple of options.

1) Join a yahoo homeschooling group and try to buy it used.

2) Virtual Schools. Hawaii Virtual School http://www.hawaiivirtualschool.com/ is a private school online. All you do is force him to sit at the computer and do his schoolwork. You can keep tabs on every aspect of his schooling. I just woke up and I can't remember how this is done, but it's all on their page. They handle all the testing and all aspects of his schooling. They even give you a letter to give to the school board saying he is now in private school.

It seems like to me that Drew is using school to stay in his shell and not come out. Socializing is easy at school, but not all socializing is good. I could be off base here, but it seems like Drew doesn't get out a lot or have a lot of friends. Plus being at all different these days is a lot more of a problem than it was in ours. Maybe being at home would force him to get out more and get involved in more things.

I have my own agenda here, because I am a homeschooling mom of a special needs child. The bottom line is Drew may be happier at home. It could be he is allergic to some cleaning solution they use at school. I know when I was a kid, they had this powder they poured over puke that smelled worse than the puke and I was distracted all day because of that. He could have the same problem.

Good luck with whatever you decide to do.

Re: Need Curiculum Ideas

We just got his allergy test results today. Nothing really bad, but I'm sure some of these things are in his school, as well as here at home. I''ll look into the Hawaii Virtual School. Thanks!

Shona, Texas Virtual Academy is looking at expanding into HS in the next year or so - I looked into last year. But they only went thru 8th. I'm positive I saw it on their site. But I'm going to look again - they may have changed it by now.
