What did you do for Halloween growing up?

Were you dh's/dw's family traditions similiar to yours?

We had a party at school, a parade, a costume contest, and the "scary" Halloween lunch, then we went trick or treatining.

Dh's family sat in the dark and prayed demons and goblins wouldn't get them. He went to religious schools were they pretended Halloween wasn't happening. (I thought my family was weird!) His mom is still weird about all her grandkids toting, but she is outruled all other kids and adults to one in the family.

So this is dh's first year to tot in a costume. He's already making plans for next year.

We had Halloween festivities at school, and then my parents took us trick or treating in the neighborhoods near our house. We lived in a fairly rural area (even though I grew up about 5 minutes from the actual city limits of Atlanta).

Nuthin' ... I wasn't allowed to celebrate or even go to school on Halloween because there would be a party there.

Re: What did you do for Halloween growing up?

We did the Halloween parties at school, the big Halloween parade in town and ToT. It is sad that my kids do a "fall fest" at school and aren't allowed to dress up even in non-scary costumes. We are leaving for ToT in about an hour....a tradition I am not about to let go, though our township tried to do away with it a few years ago and just have a party at the community center. It didn't fly with kids or parents, thank goodness.

That's sad, Elaine. I hope you have loads of fun now.

I can believe it, but that is just sad, Bridget.

On Halloween when we were kids, we watched all the American Sitcoms have ToT and Halloween parties and wished like crazy we were Americans

You are always welcome to start a new trend. I understand in some areas in Britian near American military bases, they now celebrate Thanksgiving. We are contagious!

Re: What did you do for Halloween growing up?

When I was a kid we had the celebrations at school then I was allowed to go tot at night. I just wasn't allowed to be anything scary--I was usually a cat or a clown. My parents weren't really into Halloween like Mike and I aren't really now. We just find it hard to say no. We also don't allow any scary costumes and don't do any scary decorations--no ghosts, goblins, witches, etc. The boys have been animals, and superheroes. That kind of thing. Same rules apply in my classroom at school. Actually We don't allow our kids to dress up b/c they are in 6th grade. Only up to second grade can dress up in our school.
