Here you are Tammy: Porridge

I think you guys call it Rolled Oats? or maybe just Oats? I grow up with 3 grandparents who came out from Scotland and as it is a scottish dish we called it porridge, the only difference to the following recipe is that we made it with about 1/4 tsp of salt. I know a couple who have it with a knob of butter and milk, which just seems very peculiar to me. Altho I have read about it being put in a loaf pan and when 'set' IE cold and solidified, they would slice it like bread and fry it up and have it with butter and salt, but that was in the 1800's and I guess they used it instead of bread.

Think of Goldilocks and the three bears

Porridge

Serving size: Serves 2
Cuisine type: British/Scottish/Irish
Cooking time: Less than 15 minutes
Course: Breakfast

INGREDIENTS

1ΒΌ cups oatmeal
2 cups milk
pinch of salt
2 teaspoons sugar
maple syrup, honey or brown sugar, to serve
cream to serve

Of course as a diabetic I use water not milk (altho sometimes I do use half water and half low fat milk, it is much more creamy that way) and I use sweetner instead of sugar, syrup and cream, but I remember when we were kids having it with cream or brown sugar my Mum wouldn't let us have both as it would be to rich, I hate to admit it but I think she was right )

Re: Here you are Tammy: Porridge

I love oatmeal, that is what we call it here in the states! In fact, I eat it almost every day for breakfast. I like mine with sugar and milk, but lately I have made it with skim milk and don't add sugar, but instead put in dried fruit (cranberries, golden raisins), almonds, and granola.
Oh, and thank you Maree!

You are welcome Tammy, I knew you guys had to have it too, it's too good not to be known everywhere.

While I was googling porridge I came across a version with bananas, I also have it for breakfast almost everyday.

I like it plain, but have been known to cinnamin and apples, raisens, honey (I know, my bad ) and I think I might try banana's, I love them both, but I'm not to sure about how they go together only one way to find out :d

Neither are huge favorites of mine. I used to like the chocolate cream of wheat better than the plain.

This is a recipe for delicious ( ) hominey grits with photo. They are kind of like cream of wheat or oatmeal made with corn.

cream of wheat (also known as farina)

Now I know what you are talking about, we have this in NZ and probably here in Oz too, I just haven't looked for it

We use it for .............................. Baby Food

We make it up and mix it with pureed apples, mashed banana's etc.

I've never seen an adult, or a child for that matter, eat it.

Re: Here you are Tammy: Porridge

Cream of Wheat is my favorite hot cereal! A little milk and sugar on it.... I also like oatmeal, again with milk and sugar and maybe a bit of fruit. As for the grits -in any way, shape, form or fashion...... Now THOSE are disgusting! I make all three for my kids (instant grits cause I ain't cooking them!) and they love them all.

LOL.. yeah i did the same with my cream of wheat, sometime i think what's the point of eating it, but they're just so good...

When you guys mentioned about Porridge I actually had a flash back. In my tradition we used to made porridge from rice (yum) well, it's not like western style cuz I'm half Asian. So, my mom used to made the Porridge with some chicken stock with 2:1 ratio so the rice would look like a soup, when she boiling the rice she added ginger, garlic and salt. Then she chopped some chicken meat that had been roasted before, tossed on top of porridge, add some soy sauce, sweet soy sauce, soy beans, celery leafs and some hot sauce.. OMG it's really good (at least for me.. ) It's just...... different

Re: Here you are Tammy: Porridge

Grits are nasty and so is Cream of Wheat for that matter. My dad ate cream of wheat every morning when he was diagnosed type 2 diabetic. guess it worked. Lost 70 pounds and is no longer considered diabetic.

Re: Here you are Tammy: Porridge

I like oatmeal the best, then grits, then Cream of Wheat. My husband like Wheateena. It's a dark brown whole wheat version of Cream of Wheat. Really nasty looking stuff.
