Not sure if I told ya'll or not but my sister is preggo. Just finishing up her first trimester actually. Anyway, she hasn't gone to the obgyn yet (long a$$ hoosier story there but whatever..) and we were discussing her Splenda habits during pregnancy. Do ya'll think that it is safe to use a lot of Splenda on a daily basis for the unborn baby?

From what I have read about Splenda, I don't think it's all that safe when you are not pregnant. I know it's FDA approved and all that, but I am not sure about it.
I would not use it during pregnancy. I am a certified diet coke and diet dr. pepper lover, but I avoided aspartame and all artificial sweeteners during both pregnancies. All the pregnancy books I read would not say it's okay, but fell short of saying it was not safe. They said more studies needed to be done, which left me uneasy.

Re: Artificial sweeteners during pregnancy?

Its probably the safest choice of any "artificial" sweetener. I wouldn't use a lot of anything during pregnancy including Splenda. Since it's so new there probably isn't too much info ou there. My doc said it was ok when I was pregnant and I had some here and there. Everything in moderation.

Re: Artificial sweeteners during pregnancy?

My info is 17 yrs old so probably out of date, when I was diagnosed with Gestational Diabetes I was told NOT to have anything with artificial sweetners in it because no one had done the studies needed to prove it was safe for fetal developement. The nurse said that any kind of artificail chemical was considered to be bad for fetal developement and why take unneccessary risks.

It looks like it is safe. I thought it would be.

Re: Artificial sweeteners during pregnancy?

Splenda is really questionable. It's made from Chlorine.

Re: Artificial sweeteners during pregnancy?

There's lots of other sites out there that talk about Splenda. I would just be aware. It's also relatively new, so I am sure the jury is out about Splenda and pregnancy.
Scroll down and look under Sucralose for the info about splenda here:

And honestly, really, the best thing for her to do is ask her doctor and follow the advice her doctor gives her about this.

Re: Artificial sweeteners during pregnancy?

I think the more natural, the better. I've had a couple of diet sodas since I found out I was pregnant. But I figure moderation of real sugar is better than fake stuff in general. My midwife would definitely give the same advice.

Re: Artificial sweeteners during pregnancy?

Diet soda was the one vice I didn't give up when I was pregnant. But then again, I would do 2 20 oz bottles every day, and I am actually caffeine free now. My OB was okay with my consumption.
