liver :(

Ok, so I'm anemic and need to increase my iron intake quickly. If my platelet count goes too low I'll have to have doctor supervision during the rest of my pregnancy and might not be able to give birth at home. So, I'm willing to try anything. Even what my midwife suggested...liver.

Does anyone have any recipes for liver. At least at first I'm going to have to eat a little bit everyday.

Thanks

Re: liver :(

with liver you have to cook it fast to stop it going tough and chewy.

Get your pan really hot, dredge your liver in flour, fry it for about 2 minutes and then flip it over for another two. removee from heat.

At this stage I cassorole it. chop it into bite size pieces if you want (I usually cook it whole but it's up to you how you prefer it done. Chuck it in a cassarole dish and add what you like. I usually add onions, bacon, carrots, mushrooms and peas at the end. Because you have flour on the meat it usually thickens itself. You can also use instant soup mixes to cassarole it in which adds flovour and thickens it up.

At one stage I was even adding sausages bc while I only gave the kids the bacon and veges (all 3 hated liver) Greg didn't particularely like bacon either.

Cassarole on a low heat for a couple of hours to stop it getting tough.

I have to take iron supplements and drastically increase my iron intake from food as well.

Re: liver :(

Yikes! What about spinach and the dark green and leafy vegetables? Or apricots? A lot of fruits and veggies that have iron taste a whole lot better than liver.

Re: liver :(

You can also eat spinach. Dark green leafy vegetables have a lot of iron in them too. You can get iron from other foods besides liver.

Re: liver :(

I'm going to take in as much iron as possible, then when by bloodwork comes back next month, I hope it will be back to normal. If that happens, I'll cut out anything yucky, like liver, and keep eating the other iron rich foods. Then if it's still normal after another month, I'll cut out (or cut back on) the nasty supplements. I do not want to put myself or my baby at risk during birth because of a high risk of hemorrhaging. I also do not want to go to the hospital unless absolutely necessary.

Re: liver :(

I'm one of the weird people that actually likes liver, but I prefer chicken liver (sauteed with onions, mushrooms, and peppers) to beef liver any day.

There are lots of things other than liver that are high in iron, though. Spinach is a good choice, along with the others that people have mentioned.

Re: liver :(

I wouldn't eat liver if you paid me - not even if I was preggers! I would, however, eat spinach every day for the rest of my life. I actually love any kind of greens and they are incredibly rich in iron.

Re: liver :(

Well, I cooked liver tonight and mixed a little with the chicken taco meat I made. It wasn't bad. The taste was masked well. I've also managed to pair high iron and vit C foods at every meal the last two days. Yea!

Re: liver :(

Just a word of wisdom with iron....take pericolace! Omg, you will never be able to poop after eating so much iron! Pericolace is safe to take during pregnancy and I still take it every day due to hemeroids (from my pregnancies). Otherwise you will be hurtin girlfriend, seriously!

Re: liver :(

The supplement I'm taking doesn't cause constipation. It's food based, liquid, and one of the reasons my midwife suggested it is because it doesn't make you constipated. So far I haven't had any trouble pooping, but I'll keep that in mind if I notice a slow down.
