Until recently I thought everyone saved every ornament and each one was special. Now, I find out a lot of people chuck the whole tree - lights, ornaments and all. Heck, I even save garland. I thought everyone did until about a week ago.

I get rid of the tree and the garland. The rest stays. My kiddos have made most of those ornaments and I won't get rid of them at all!

I'm pretty sure my Mum still has the angel vince made at Kindy and the decorations that Justin made when he was at kindy and they are more than 30-35 yrs old. How can decorating have any meaning when there is no history in the decorations. We do buy one new decoration every year but then we do the "remember when" when we are hanging them.

If you throw them out you may as well buy a decorated tree and have someone else put it up for you.

Sometimes we throw away the lights cuz they are so cheap to just buy every year and not worry about winding em up nice etc. Regarding ornaments-well that is the strangest thing that I have ever heard! We buy a couple of new ones every year but we also save every single one including paper ornaments that the children make! I can't imagine throwing those out. Garland we throw out yearly though for the most part too.

i even keep the broken ones sometimes.
every single ornament hanging on our tree has a story behind it

i have never heard of dumping the entire tree before, that is just ludicris (sp)

I've never seen whole decorated trees tossed. We keep our ornaments as they have meaning to us, and we keep the lights as well.

I keep my ornaments. If they break, then I throw them away. I keep my lights until a couple of them burn out. I've had the same lights for 5 years and some lights just started not to work.

I've never seen anyone do it either, but I read the other day that many people do. I am glad I am not the only "frugal" one. Jennifer, I keep garland for years too. When it starts looking bad I use it outside. I do have one strand I am throwing out this year. It's getting some bald spots and they are starting connect.

We keep everything except out tree becuase its real. I buy the hallmark ornaments for our family 200X, Barbie, and Logan's first christmas ones every year(except Logans of course). Then Shane's aunt attaches ornaments to our gifts every year so we keep thoes.

I keep everything, including the tree since it is artificial! We get each of the kids a new ornsment every year - sometimes expensive, sometimes not. This year they will have to be cheap ones since money is so tight. Then, when they are ready to move out on their own, they will have some meaningful ornaments to start with!

We keep it all... minus the tinsel, because that's just too much of a pain in the butt.
Jim and I were commenting on this the other day, because we have a ton of ornaments... more than will actually fit on the tree now. The girls get a new ornament every year, so do Jim and I. We make ornaments for friends every year and keep a few, my friends make ornaments and give them to me etc... We have decided to donate some plain balls to a charity this year, but they have no sentimental value. We bought them from Ikea to fill the tree when we were first married and didn't have as many. So all of those plain silver and blue balls (minus two of each) are being given away...
A friend asked us what our tree theme is and Jim and I just laughed... it's memories, plain and simple. I can tell you where each ornament on that tree came from, and when the girls move out the tree will look quite bare because they will take their ornaments with them.

I keep everything too. We have even changed over to a fake tree....we keep everything unless they are broken. I have ornaments (and even decorations) from 15+ years ago

I save it all ... sometimes I wish I could could just toss it out instead of undoing it all and boxing everything back up though! Such a headache ... nothing ever seems to fit back in the box it came out of!

I could never figure out people who wanted a tree with a 'theme' or worse, a tree that is painfully picture perfect. My sister had a roomate like that - all the ornaments had to match.

The first ornament to go on our tree every year is one I made when I was in pre-school - a red construction paper dove with a gold metallic pipecleaner hanger. I think it used to have glitter on it, too - of course, that's long gone.

Many of the ornaments I have came from my parents when I moved out on my own. Since then, we've collected more (as gifts, via Freecycle, sales, etc). When Joey moves out with his ornaments, our tree won't be naked, but it certainly won't be as crowded.

Fake tree so keep (just bought a new one the year Peyton was born) bought new lights last year - only toss when they stop working. ornaments are kept unless they are broken beyond super glue fixability. Don't do garland on the tree.

Yep. We have the fake tree, so we keep everything unless it's non-repairable. We have a ton of the personalized dough ornaments (from craft shows).... I think we covered almost 10 Christmases.... and I keep all the ornaments. Never use tinsel or garland.... just don't like it.
