Santa ?

OK we all have out opinions on whether or not to tell our kids if he is real or not.

Needless to say - We have Santa. A few years ago I told Lys he wasn't real and she didn't believe me so I left it at that.

The other day she asked me if he was real. I asked her what she thoguht adn she told me that she thought God was Santa. I told her "could be" and left it at that.

All I'm looking for are opinions on what to do/say if she brings it up again. KEvin has no opinion on whether or not we "do" Santa as long as the girls know the true reason of Christmas.

Re: Santa ?

I just tell my children that as long as you 'believe' then of course there is a Santa. Santa may not be the commercialized version that they are thinking of at this young age but as they get older they will realize that 'Santa' comes in all forms and versions. I still believe in Santa!

Re: Santa ?

Personally I am really into telling my kids the truth when they ask about something. And at her age, she may not push it too far. If she asks if Santa is real, tell her yes, there really was a man who was named sinterklaus ( I think) and it was later translated to Santa Claus. He was a good Christian man ( Saint Nicholas) and we still accept him as part of our culture today. So, infact.. there IS a santa claus.. he just isn;t still alive.. that's all But.. you can leave that part out, I would lol.

Re: Santa ?

My older kids don't believe and never have. I wasn't taught to believe in Santa and didn't really know how to create the illusion myself. As for Grace, I don't know ... her Dad likes the kids to believe and she isn't old enough to question anything right now.

Re: Santa ?

Well my 11 year old doesn't believe but the other two do. When my 8 year old ask me this year if he was real, I ask him the "do you believe he is real?" questions and he said yes, and my 5 year old(smart-a$$ that he is) pipes in "yeah, we believe, but is he really real?" . Then the middle one says "well Santa has to be real cause mom and dad sure don't have that kinda money!"

So, for now they still believe, but I think this will probably be the last year for any of them.

Re: Santa ?

my response will be to reach for the encyclopedia because he's in there. I will tell them the story of Santa from long ago and that he will always live in your heart if you believe.

This, and also, it has been told to friend's kids I am an agent of Santa (my given name being Nicole), therefor I can report to him. (I do report to mom and dad)

Re: Santa ?

Thanks guys!

You all gave me a bunch of really good ideas. I think I may hit the store to see if I can find a book about the "real" Santa for her.

Re: Santa ?

One of my favorite authors, Terry Pratchett says, Santa is the little lie that allows us to believe in the big lies like justice, honor, respect, and dignity. If you culled the whole universe, you would never find one molecule of justice. But it is real and we all believe in it. If my dd says something to me about Santa being a lie, that's what I'm going to tell her and not to tell her sister, of course.

Re: Santa ?

I love that my kids believe in Santa and will be sad when the magic of Santa is gone for them. My oldest is beginning to question Santa and I tell him that of course there is a Santa! We have talked about how Santa started and of course my kids know that we celebrate Christmas because of the birth of Jesus, but Santa is magical and fun. I want them to believe as long as possible.

Re: Santa ?

I think that we are looking at the last year or two. Tori seems so young to already question it, but I guess that's what happens when they start school. She already really questions the tooth fairy so I figure santa is coming

I agree. Emily definitely knows the real reason for Christmas, and she sees Santa as a side benefit.

This is how we approach it here, too.

Re: Santa ?

I think Joey has figured out Santa, but won't admit it. You see, if you believe in Santa, you get more presents.

Nah, if he were to ask me, I'd tell him that Santa represents the spirit of Christmas, of giving and sharing love with those around you. He also knows some of the Christian origin of Christmas, as well - as best I can teach, anyhow. Whenever he expresses more of an interest in such things, I either refer him to someone who knows, or we spend some time at the library looking things up.

Re: Santa ?

We hd to finally give up the Santa myth this year. Ally questioned it last year, but this year told me she thought it was "you and Dad". i told her ther truth becasue that's what she asked for. But we also talked about the "spirit" of Santa and giving.

Re: Santa ?

Santa Claus is a mythical or legendary figure that is very famous specially to kids. He left gifts into socks or in the fireplace and rides on a sleigh. Whenever I thought of him I feel happy, he add joy and hope to children. Sometimes, I guess it's actually our parents who does Santa thing.
