Chrysler, Ford Idle Factories; GM Delays New Plant

Chrysler announced Wednesday that it is closing all of its North American manufacturing plants for at least a month, the starkest move taken by U.S. automakers as they anxiously await word about government loans.

More people out of work with no clue if their job will still exist after the lay off. So many businesses have closed or are closing in my town. Our GM dealership closed and removed all the cars over a week ago. I don't think they'll be back anytime soon.

Its scarey when you look at all this and see how close to home this is hitting. Who would ever think that places such as GM, Ford, etc...would ever be in such a crisis.

I know that right now the job loses are in the manufacturing sector of these businesses but what is going to happen at the dealerships. GOtta wonder how long it will be until they are all hit as well

The auto makers need to file bankruptcy and re-organize and be done with it. They are no better than the airlines, and the airlines survived bankruptcies. They can do it without the government's help, if they want to.

I just feel for the men and women being laid off at Christmas time. It is hard any other time of the year, but now some of them must be wondering if they should take their kids' gifts back for refunds. I don't care about corporate fat cats (who probably gave themselves a big bonus for the "outstanding" job they are doing), but when giants fall a lot of little people are crushed.

A coworker of mine and I were talking about the Big Three situation. I think they would get more business if they put people on a payment plan, like the dealership Steve works for did to him when he bought his car. Instead of getting a loan, Steve is paying the dealership directly. It's a payment plan through the dealership and not the bank. No loans involved. It would work the same way though if you get so far behind in payments...the dealership repossessing the car. No middle man. Just the automaker/dealership.

Oh, and I really don't think it's necessary for the owners to make as much money as they are making. I hate it when big owners makes tons and tons of money and the real workers of the company get peanuts. It's especially illogical when someone makes more money than the President of the US. That doesn't make sense to me.
