Inducing?

Just general questions on who has been inducted, why you chose or your Dr. chose to have you induced and your general opinion of how things went.

I was talking to a lady I know who said that being inducted is the way to go. I personally feel that I would prefer to let my body & baby decide but I am curious to know other peoples thoughts.

I am due in the beginning of April and I have been asked to photograph a wedding at the end of the month and it just got me thinking about the fact that the baby may not be on the same schedule as I am! Definitely a topic for my next appt!

Re: Inducing?

I've done both and prefer to go on my own. I hate being stuck to the bed not being able to do much...whereas if you go on your own and wait a bit before going in you're free to move about more. Women have been having babies for years without medical help, so many people think childbirth should be treated like a medical procedure
That's just my 2 cents, since this is your first though I would try and go on your own!

Re: Inducing?

I was fullterm, went into labor, showed up at the hospital, no heartbeat. So, after the stillbirth we opted for an early induction. Personal choice. I had an amnio at 37 weeks to check for lung development and Zachariah's lungs were fine so we induced at 37. He wasn't ready so I ended up with a c-section. Fine with me b/c he's healthy and I was fine too. Zachariah also had a nucheal cord same as his sister who was stillborn. Had we waited I don't know what would have happened. I thank God every day He guided our doctors and I delivered early and by section. The nucheal cord was what killed his sister. Noah was a planned c-section also at 37 weeks after an amnio. Also perfectly healthy.

Re: Inducing?

I was induced with all 3 of the girls...
I was over 42 weeks with Tessa, and had been at 2 cm for 5 weeks... My body just wasn't going into labor on it's own. They induced because there was concern that if I went any longer one or the other of us was going to be in trouble.
With Samantha they induced me at 38 weeks... I was again showing no signs of labor on my own, she was measuring large and my blood pressure was high.
Karah, they induced me at 39 weeks. No real reason other than the fact that at this point they knew I didn't go into labor on my own and L&D was slow that day. I had originally been scheduled for an induction the following week.
I would love to have gone into labor on my own... and felt my water break etc... My hormones are so out of whack though, they don't think it would ever have happened (or that it would have been too late for us). With Karah, thank goodness I was on the table when they broke my water, because the cord was prolapsed, I would have lost her before I made it to the hospital had my water broke on it's own.

Re: Inducing?

I went on my own with 4 of mine and was induced with Teagan. Why? hmm.. good question. My BP was a little high, but under control. They said I had gestational diabetes but other than the day of the three hour test, my suger NEVER went above normal. Myrtle Beach has a 99% induction rate. I was told by one doctor that it was "inconsiderate to the other doctors in the practice to let a patient go on their own" because another doctor would have to deliver that patient. I was furious. When I was induced.. I was told later that day that if I didn't want pitocin I would be released nad sent home. That tells me there was no emergency, no real reason to induce me if they were willing to just send me home if I wanted to go. I HATED it. It was horrible. And unless my life is in danger, or this baby's life is in danger I will NOT do it again. And I say this after having back labor with one of mine, the induction was way worse than back labor and I broke my hand during back labor. As far as the cord being wrapped around the babies neck like Abby's were.. that's between you, your husband and your doctor. The cord was wrapped around Ian's neck, twice.. and around Kyan's neck once and they did just fine going through natural (well.. non induced) labor. Neither of them were showing signs of distress.

Good luck with your decision, but please.. please make sure it is either medically needed or it is in fact Y O U R decision.

Re: Inducing?

What Shona said is true. Most cases of nucheal cord (cord wrapped around the babys neck or other part of its body) turn out fine). In our case it did not. That was a a risk I was not willing to take. With Zachariah during active labor his heartrate was dipping with each contraction near the end. That's when my doc made the call for the section. Would he have been delivered fine with the nucheal or would that stress have been too much? You just never know. You can't really see cord compression on an ultrasound or even on a NST. I had a NST the day before my stillbirth. I'm happy I had the early induction and the consequent section.

Ideally a natural birth should be the easiet to recover from. I've had it all three ways. Natural with no pain drugs, induced with pitocin and then a c-section and planned c-section. I had better recoveries from the section--probably having to do with my mental state as well.

Re: Inducing?

I had natural labor and delivery with my oldest and induction due to PIH/pre-eclmpsia with the second two. I have to say, the natural labor was hideous...36 hours of sheer hell. I had what they call a "dry" birth(I had little to no amniotic fluid) and had to be stuck in bed on oxygen for 12 hours....it was horrible.
I had always heard pitocin induced labor was worse then natural so when I had to be induced with my second I was terrified. I was definately planning to have the epidural that time. Turns out I didn't need one. My labor was very easy and not even close to as painful as my first. By the time I had contractions hard enough to beg for drugs it was too late, I was 9.5 cm dilated and almost ready to push.
With the third, I was induced and though it took 2 days of on again off again pitocin(I was almost 4 weeks early, so he wasn't ready to come out and play yet), it still never got as horrible as my first. One little shot of DEM/FENT got me through day three(more to relax me then for pain I think).
As I said, I was induced for health reasons both times, however, we were planning inducing my third either way because he had been measuring large since 23 weeks and my OB did not want to risk shoulder dystocia with a very large baby. It would have been a good thing too, because Jess weighed 7lb 12 oz at 37.5 weeks, if he had went full term he would have been around 2 pounds bigger at the rate he was growing.

Re: Inducing?

WOW Bridget, I would have been induced with measurments like that! A friend of mine had her first at over 10 lbs. Would have been my last.

Re: Inducing?

Jess was measuring almost 3lbs at 23 weeks.....I always measured about 4-6 inches ahead at my appts.....He grew quick and fast and I guess it was for the best since he had to be delivered early.

Re: Inducing?

Teacherinct, I am so sorry about your daughter, I can't even imagine what that must have been like. Huge hugs & prayers to you. So glad that you have 2 healthy boys now though. Thanks for sharing your experience with me.

Pretty interesting about all the induction opinions and the all the different experiences! My sister-in-law works in the L&D department and her hospital does A LOT of inductions as well as a lot of c-sections which I guess must be b/c of all the inductions? I have an appt. next week so I am looking forward to talking to my Dr. about all this and what she thinks of everything and what her policy is if I go past my due date for instance.

Re: Inducing?

With my daughter I was induced at 37 weeks 2 days because I was toxemic. My blood pressure was high 160/90-100 (I'm usually around 90/60) and I gained 13 lbs of fluid in 3 days. With my son I was induced at 37 weeks 4 days because he was a HUGE baby... he was delivered at 9# 3 1/2 oz..... I couldn't imagine if I'd gone 40+ weeks. Plus, I was a high risk pregnancy because I went into heart failure after my first child.

Induction is not a bad thing. However, it is something that shouldn't be done as a "convenience". Mine were done for health issues.

Re: Inducing?

Good Luck!

All three of mine so far have come on their own - anywhere from just about 37 weeks to 38.5 weeks. I have never made it to 40 (although who knows this one might )

I think its important to discuss w/ dr their views, your views (and your DH) before deciding.

Personally - if not medically necessary I do not want to be induced. It scares the cr@p out of me (like a c-section and epidurals)
