I went to bed around 11 last night. Around 1:30 Noah comes into our room screaming. He had gone to bed fine and woke up screaming "My throat isn't working". It was so scary. At first we thought he was saying my "My boat is working!" and I was asking him what he was saying and he climbed on the bed and yelled "MY THROAT ISN'T WORKING!" I immediately laid down with him and Mike ran for the prednisone. We have a plan now to calm him which make the stridor go away faster. His lips were already blue at this point. This is the 4th time he's had croup. I gave him prednisone and when he wasn't crying took him downstairs to the colder air but still wasn't comfortable with his breathing so off to Yale Children's Hospital after a call to the pedi. They released Noah from the hospital at 5 am. They gave him Decadron (steroid) and said the virus must have settled in his throat which was very swollen. The decadron lasts for 3 days, which is much better than prednisone, they said. That should be long enough to get rid of the virus. I was under the impression that the predisone works quickly but the ER doc said no that it takes at the least, 6 hours and lasts only 12. I see a marked improvement when he takes the meds but the ER doc said it was psychosymtimatic--I feel better about giving the meds so he feels better b/c I feel better--and I am better about dealing with the crisis. My husband and I don't run around like crazy now b/c we have a plan 1) calm and cuddle him while we get the meds 2) dose him 3) give him the cold air (warm doesn't work for him) 4) if he's still striderous in 5 minutes we call an ambulance 5) if still wheezing or coughing after 15 minutes notify pedi and go to ER
I signed off FB and went to bed and saying ..."going to bed--Boring!" Never doing that again!

Poor little guy. I hope he feels better quickly.
