I need some of your best tips. ALL KINDS of tips.

Drew is doing Connections Academy, which is a public school that you attend at home.

Do you have a set schedule?
How do you MAKE them work and not play?
A place set aside for schooling and only schooling? Or a place that does double duty? i dont have anywhere for "just" schooling.

Anything you can suggest for these and other things would so much appreciated!

We have a place that is just for school a corner with a nice desk, wall hangings and encouraging posters, reminders, calendar... and Duncan uses his bed LOL. Or the Kitchen table.

Duncan gets up whenever he wants, or whenever I need his help usually around 9:30 or so. And he starts his work at 11 or 11:30

As far as getting him to work and not play... hmm.. At first I told him if he didn't work he would end up back in school. That helped. I also let him take LOTS of breaks. If he finishes three lessons, he gets 15 minutes. 5 lessons he gets 30-45 minutes. He didn't work yesterday at all, so he did 12 lessons today and after the 7th one he got over an hour break. BUT.. I tend to give ten minute breaks more often. It helps him keep on task while he is working when he knows there is a goal. Finish a few, get a break. He eats lunch when he wants, and gets 30 minutes for it. But he also helps me with the little ones during the day so those are mini-breaks. He is usually done by 2 or 3 sometimes later depending.

I let Drew take breaks fairly often - especially during the boring Ed Tech lessons. Once an hour he gets 15 minutes. So work 45, rest 15. It works for his ADD

Re: Homeschooling - New for us

that's great, and yeah Duncan is ADHD so we do alot of things verbally too. I quit making him write in his science journal after the first month of school. And as far as doing workbook things and stuff that is not graded or turned in, we make sure he gets the concepts na dlearns the lessons, but he is able to answer the questions to me verbally or on his own. If his grade goes down, then he has to do the work book assignments again.

Re: Homeschooling - New for us

For our oldest has Asperger's syndrome. We have a daily schedule (but it can be flexible, if needed).

We try to have distractions to a minimum so we homeschool in the afternoons while DH is at work and my toddler is taking a nap. During that time we work on Language Arts, Math and Reading. The other subjects are done with both boys (each at their own grade level).

We take breaks for snack but no television during homeschooling (that's the rule). If we don't finish on a particular lesson we pick up on it later or the next day. I try not to make it too much like a school setting because boredom can set in....

Sandra! Hello Stranger! Sure do miss you around here!

You know, you were one of the first people I thought of when we decided to pull Drew out of school (right after Shona, since Duncan attends the same school as Drew). Do you know of any online homeschooling groups for Texas? Most of the ones I have found aren't very useful.

Re: Homeschooling - New for us

I belong to mainly online homeschool communities where I get ideas and exchange information with other parents. (PM me for the links).

As far as online homeschooling groups, have you tried looking at the yahoo group, G-HAH ยท Greater Houston Area Home Educators they are in the 10th year online.
