Snowy day activities: Make your own suet and feeder

This site gives several different styles of homemade feeders and suet. It is not specifically for kids. We made our own feeder and homemade suet today. I thought I had a jar of peanut butter, but I didn't.

My homemade feeder didn't work out so well, so I raked out the $2 at walmart for a wire mesh suet feeder.

I am so glad we made this! My whole family has really enjoyed it. My cats love it. And most of all, I think it may have saved my little buddy Crash the Cardinal's life. He eats from it non stop. It has been so cold, I have been worried about Crash's survival. But he seems to be doing okay. I thought all the ground feeders where gone, but we have been finding loads of bird footprints in the snow where Crash knocks out all the seed he doesn't like and others eat it.

My neighbor who is an avid bird watcher said the chickedees were hitting my thistle feeder hard.

We don't have any trees in our yard at all. Except the crepe myrtle I planted on Kimmy's first birthday (6 yrs ago) and it is still too small.

I didn't know they had ground feeders...cool!

We have one HUGE pine cone that we repeatedly roll in peanut butter and sprinkle bird seed on that they love

Some birds eat entirely off the ground. You can make or buy feeders for birds who eat off the ground, but they will also eat anything other birds knock out of regular feeders. Two of the feeders are hanging outside my living room window. The thistle feeder is on the porch. I don't have any trees my kids can see well enough to identify the birds from our apartment. You could probably have a window feeder for your girls, Michelle. I know they have a lot of allergies and can't have furry pets.

We do the pine cone thing. But I refuse to buy bird seed just for that. We cover it in peanut butter and then roll it in bread crumbs (homemade from stale bread), old croutons or crushed (stale) crackers. I used to just toss them in the back yard, but Bruiser (our male puppy) was eating them! Of course, we dont' have snow here, so I don't have to worry about them getting buried. But now we put them in them in the bushes. it's too hard to get tot he high tree branches of our trees. Our cat, tho, has started staking out the bushes! Rick is gonna rig some heavy twice with a fishing weight so I can toss them into the trees. Dont' know that that will stop the cat, tho!
