First lady not happy with Sasha, Malia dolls

First lady Michelle Obama is not pleased about the marketing of a pair of dolls that bear the same names as her daughters.

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/28854593/

I totally understand Michelle's point. I would feel and do the same in her shoes. But I am not in her shoes, sooo......

Where in the heck can I get these dolls? My dd loves Sasha and Malia! And do you pronounce Malia anyway?

Re: First lady not happy with Sasha, Malia dolls

Malia is just like it sounds Mah-Lea

Sadly you can tell they are lying about who the resemble. They have dolls for everything now

Can't say I'm shocked.

Re: First lady not happy with Sasha, Malia dolls

If I were Michelle Obama, I would be pissed as well. People need to leave these little girls alone!

However, if you MUST have them, you can BUY IT NOW on ebay for between $30 and $40 for the set.

Re: First lady not happy with Sasha, Malia dolls

Honestly, I don't see what the big deal is. They are respectfully made. At least they aren't slutty looking Bratz dolls made to look like them!

Re: First lady not happy with Sasha, Malia dolls

They're basically rag dogs. I don't have to have them, but my girls really love the First Daughters. This is the closest thing we have in America to a real princess. It's natural girls would love them. Plus their haven't been young kids in the White House for such a long time AND they are very pretty. Chelsea Clinton was a nice young lady, but she wasn't pretty like these two. I can see why the kids around here love them.

To my girls, these girls are like Disney princesses only real. The live in a "palace". Their Dad is the "king". Their mom is the "queen".

Re: First lady not happy with Sasha, Malia dolls

It's not like Barbies and are replicas (so to speak) of the First Girls. However, it's a strange coincidence that not only are the names the same, but so is the race.

Re: First lady not happy with Sasha, Malia dolls

Please, Ty is lying thru their teeth! Of course those doll are supposed tobe them. But they can't admit that without getting into big court battle.

Ally hasn't expressed an interest, but I think they would be neat to have, anyway.

Re: First lady not happy with Sasha, Malia dolls

You can tell by looking at the dolls who they are supposed to resemble. I would have though a company like Ty would have asked if they wanted dolls like them. I mean there are lots of dolls out there that look like famous people but those people have a hand in creating them!

Usually they do, but politicians are a grey area. Of course, these girls are only semi public figures and not politicians. In a way the Obamas should be flattered, nobody wanted Bush twin Barbies or Chelsea Clinton dolls. Amy Carter is just a few years older than me and I didn't want an Amy Carter doll.

Re: First lady not happy with Sasha, Malia dolls

But at the same time the Obama's have put out the word that they would like their daughters private life respected. We all know it won't be because too many people want to know all about them. I mean if anyone is going to make a buck off these little girls why not let it be them and put it in their bank account instead of in TY's

Re: First lady not happy with Sasha, Malia dolls

True. I thought the dolls were cute. Of course, there may be some law against them making money off their images. Obviously, there is no law concerning other people making money off their images. There are Obama family products all over the web. Maybe they could find a way to coherce Ty to give some of the profits to a children's charity of their choice.

Re: First lady not happy with Sasha, Malia dolls

They are cute. I just think they should have worked with the family. I think donating proceeds to charity sounds like a good idea

Re: First lady not happy with Sasha, Malia dolls

They shouldn't have just popped it on them. Did you see where they were selling these? It sounded like some rich place where no kids are. Obviously, these weren't marketed for little girls originially at least.

Re: First lady not happy with Sasha, Malia dolls

I can see the First Lady's point of view ... HOWEVER, if someone made a doll that looked like my child and had her name, I'd be rushing out to get it ... HOW COOL!

I so agree with you Wendy!
Granted, The Obama's don't have any financial problems, but you can never put enough away for college!

Re: First lady not happy with Sasha, Malia dolls

IMHO Personally, if you want your private life private, you don't become famous. I think once you are famous, you just gotta deal with it. I don't think it's any different than making a blond curvy doll and calling her Brittany. As long as they aren't marketing them as the "Obama dolls"(Ty hasn't, the media is the ones making it an issue, that and the Obama's themselves) then they have done nothing wrong and shouldn't have to share the profit with anyone. They don't have the names or the race copy written or patented. The production of those dolls creates jobs, a law suit won't hurt TY, just the workers who make and sell them and in this economy that is just BS. With all this country's problems, this shouldn't even be an issue.

Re: First lady not happy with Sasha, Malia dolls

Well then what a mighty big coincidence that TY made two hip looking dolls. That are the same color and have the same names as the presidents daughters. I mean right there is a lie and I don't respect liars. They could have just said they admired the family.

Re: First lady not happy with Sasha, Malia dolls

Oh and since the economy is so bad, I won't be buying a doll so I won't be keeping anyone at TY in a job. The only reason people will buy these dolls is so that years from now they can make more money on them. I think the whole beanie baby doll thing is stupid.

Re: First lady not happy with Sasha, Malia dolls

I never said the dolls weren't made in the likeness of those girls, or that Ty didn't know what they were doing in making something that will be considered "collectible". However they didn't use anything illegal to do it, and they aren't using the "OBAMA" name. They named their new dolls after two very pretty and famous people. There is a similar doll out called "Brittany", I have seen "Chelsea" dolls as well. And like it or not those two girls are FAMOUS. They will never again, no matter what the Obama's want, have any kind of private life. They will be followed by paparazzi for a long time to come...maybe forever. There names are going to shoot up in popularity on the names list(Just like Chelsea did), and become very over-popular. Heck I see Obama crap all over the place....pillows, throws, tee shirts...you name it. So is the big deal behind this really about the dolls themselves(as someone said, they are cute and tasteful....I might see the point if they were made slutty and horrible) or is it that the Obama's aren't getting a cut of the profit? If I had the money I would probably buy them. The fact that they have made a big deal about it has made them a collectors item even more then their looks or names. Heck...I have a box of sealed, with tags beanie babies packed away....don't collect them any more, but not ashamed that I used to.

Re: First lady not happy with Sasha, Malia dolls

If I could afford them, I would buy them too. My dd (and other girls around where I live) adore these girls and want to be their friends. Truthfully, unlike say actors, politicians whole families become famous with them. It's part of the package. Ben Afflack and Jennifer Garner have great looking girls too. Their careers could end tomorrow and in two years everyone will be going, who? But the president's kids... Well, I still remember Amy Carter vividly and her dad hasn't been president for almost 30 years. There are tons of actors and actresses, but only one president at a time. The Bush twins and Chelsea Clinton aren't off the hook yet. Heck, look at Caroline Kennedy, she's still in the limelight due to her dad (more now due to herself) and he's been dead, what? Forty five years?

Re: First lady not happy with Sasha, Malia dolls

I would buy them. i think these lil girls are good set examples for lil girls today.. i mean im so glad that Hanna Montana hype is slowly disappearing away. as long as the Obama girls are doing great.. im sure alot of girls would look up to them.
