Logan's Physical Thearpy

I'm not sure if I ever posted anything about Logan's neck on here before so I will catch up all up incase I have not.

When we brought Logan home from the hospital he would lay on the right side of his head when he would sleep or even play on the floor. Being new partents Shane and I didn't think anything about it.

At his two month appointment his doctor said that his head was starting to flatten out and he is not wanting to look to the left. She showed us some streches we could not at home and said everything would be fine in a few weeks.

So Shane and I did the streches everytime we changed his diaper for two weeks and things did improve. So he went into the doctor for his four month check and she said that their is still some tightness and he was NOT looking to his left almost at all and his face was not looking a little flat on that side.

She recomeded us to a physical tharapist that would cost us $100 per visit and was scheduled twice every two weeks. I paniced bc there was no way we could come up with $400 a month for that. We found that a program (help me grow) offered different servies like that so I contected them right away and got him in to see one of their physical tharapist for free (thank god).

He was going in twice a month since he was about four months old, and we were sent home with different instructions as he got older and more skills started to develop. We found we could trick him into looking to his left at different times during different activities where he didn't know he was streching that muscle that was tight.

Well last night he went in and she was doing her normal playing/evaluating him and during the session she was really impressed with the way he is exploring and just curious about everything and also that he is walking.

She said that his neck is doing so well that she no longer sees the need to bring him in any longer unless his doctor sees that he still needs it. His evaluation also showed that his is above his age level in all 10 catagories and she put in at a year and half old's level.

I had told her I was a little worried that he started doing a lot more when the little boy he is buddies with at my sitters started doing things (Lucas is four months older then Logan) and wondered if he would slow down if he or Lucus would leave the sitters. She said no that it was in his personality that he is as envovled in learning new and different skills.

I just want to share more good news about Logan with all of you. Thanks!

Re: Logan's Physical Thearpy

Oh wow! Fantastic.
My nephew only looks to the right and hates looking to the left. And has a VERY flat head on his right side? Do you think this is something I should tell her?

That is great news! My youngest would not use her left hand for anything. After a year of OT, she now has normal use of her left hand. Isn't Birth to Three wonderful? I wish we knew we qualified when my oldest was younger.

Wendy I would say yes. The concerns they had that he would not crawl on time, would not be able to walk bc the tilt would set him off balance, and he would not be able to use his left arm as well bc that muscle would also start to be tight like the one in his neck.

So I would say something to her about it, I'm suprised the dr has not said anything.

Re: Logan's Physical Thearpy

He's 3 months old so he's only seen the doctor for his 2 week appointment and then at the beginning of the month. She's been trying to prop his head in different directions and no matter what you do he wiggles it around to his right side. He will stare at the back of the couch while he is wide awake because he refuses to turn his head.

We also tried to prop Logan up and he too wiggled his way out of it. What we eneded up doing when he was four months was:

The propping as much as possible.

When he was in his car seat we would make it to where he could not look to his right, he would either look stright or left.

If your nephew is eating cereal or other solids they could have him have to look left to eat. When giving him a bottle if they hold him have then try to get him to look left when he is feeding. If sometimes they don't hold him while feeding have them prop him up to look left.

When they lay him down for tummy time, have them make him look to him left for about 10 sec. He will cry, but it is not hurting anything. When they are changing his diapers have then turn him head until his ear touches the floor, he will cry with this strech also.

Let her know if the doctor don't say anything to her at his next appointment, have her say somthing to the doctor.

Re: Logan's Physical Thearpy

Is there a medical "name" for this? It sounds like something physical, not a "choice".

Re: Logan's Physical Thearpy

Its probably because they kept their head in that position most of the time in the womb instead of moving it around. Drew had that problem. At about 6mos pregnant, there simply wasn't any room and he had already gotten into a breech position and couldn't turn his head. The stretching exercising usually take care of it, is what oue ped at the time said. But it can lead to some problems later n if not taken care of. We only had to do the exercises/stretches for about 3-4 months.

Logan's physical tharapist never really called it anything, just tighting of the muscle.

They did ask me what side I slept on at night and I told them that I had slept on my right, bc for some reason sleeping on my left made me sick. They think that, that may have something to do with it.

Re: Logan's Physical Thearpy

Oh ok.
It's just when I read the thread title, about Pysical Therapy I wondered.
I have a 5 yr old daughter, when born, she wasn't moving on one side like she should have been, including turning her head to the one head, and it turns out she has, hemiplegia>> mild cerebral palsy on one side of the body. She has reg therapy.

Glad to hear your son doesn't have this.
