Obesity Caught Like Common Cold

Yet another claim that a common and contagious virus is linked to some cases of obesity is in the news today.

Studies on humans show that 33 per cent of obese adults had contracted an adenovirus called AD-36 at some point in their lives, according to an article in the UK's Daily Express, whereas only 11 per cent of lean men and women have had the virus.

To me, sounds like some people are grasping at straws, trying to place blame on anything but themselves.

Re: Obesity Caught Like Common Cold

Well, maybe not. After years of suffering, they found that a HUGE majority of people with ulcers actually had a type of virus that was about 80% treatable to "cure" the sufferer. I was tested for it (even tho I don't have an ulcer, I have GERD). The nurse told me that most people have to go thru treament for several months and about 80% of them can be "cured". I see no reason why this couldn'tbe true for some overweight people as well. Not saying that is an excuse not to diet and exercise and generally take care fo yourself. But if it's something you can't control and they can help you with, why not? Stranger things have happened!

Re: Obesity Caught Like Common Cold

I have tried literally everything to loose weight including starving myself and working out 3 hours a day. I did not loose any weight. I know for a 100% fact I was exposed to biological weapons in the Persian Gulf. Most vets with Gulf War Syndrome are obese, but suffer no obesity related illnesses. We were all exposed to genetically engineered bio viruses. I would really like to know if there is a correlation between the spread of obesity and military bases. I have felt for awhile that Gulf War Illness is contagious and may cause obesity.

I think you can't look at obesity as a one cause or one cure thing. Some people are obese due to genetic issues, some due to mental health issues, some people have this virus, some people have thyriod disease or pcos. I don't think the solution is one thing cures all. One thing did not cause all. One thing will not cure all. Besides, recently, Yahoo news reported on a study which found although exercise does improve health, it does not correlate to weight loss.

I did say some, ok? I understand that there are other reasons for obesity.

L - what you say makes sense. Could your MS be part of your problem as well?

Re: Obesity Caught Like Common Cold

I have talked to and met loads of fat people with MS. On the down side, we are fat. On the upside, we tend to live a lot longer than our compatriots who loose a lot of weight from it.

Well, gotta count your blessings where you can. But then, would it really be a blessing? Living longer overweight?

Re: Obesity Caught Like Common Cold

Yeah, because from the examples I know, those who loose a lot of weight from it die in a couple of years. Those who gain have a normal lifespan. At least, that is what I have noticed.
