Weightloss when sick?

Dylan has always been a hefty kid, I weighed him almost 2 weeks ago at work and he was 49.4 pounds. When they weighed him at the doctors office on Sunday he was 44 pounds. He hasn't eaten in nearly a week. He isn't drinking as much as I'd like him to, but I'm letting him have whatever he wants to drink, whenever he wants to drink it. He's mainly been eating pedialyte popsicles for the past week, maybe 3 or 4 a day. He's eaten some grapes, and maybe 3 Nutri-grain bars since Friday.

He goes to the MD in about an hour, and I want to see what he's going to weigh.

His appetite typically picks up quickly, but he's NEVER lost this much weight before. Is it healthy/unhealthy for kids to lose that much weight when they're sick?

Re: Weightloss when sick?

There could be a slight difference in your scale and their scale. I know my doctor's scale is a good 2 pounds heavier than mine and I tell him every time that he should use mine instead....LOL

But I lost 5 pounds after Christmas when I had the flu. As long as he is getting his fluids, he should be ok.

Re: Weightloss when sick?

He'll be fine. Ally does that everytime she gets sick. I'm the only one in my house who eats when they are sick. Ally has lost as much as 8 pounds (when she was really sick 2 years ago for almost 2 weeks straight). The ped said that as long as she is eating something and taking in plenty of fluids (so she didn't dehydrate), not to worry about it. Sure enough, she gained every bit of it back in less than a month.

Re: Weightloss when sick?

It's normal Robyn,

in fact growing up in NZ I used to hear all the time that "That's a healty, bonny Plunket baby" (Plunket nurses come around once a week for the first 6=9 weeks to weigh baby and answer any questions you may have) Which meant that the baby was chubby with those cute little rolls of fat at their elbows and knees.

the reason they encouraged "bonny" babies is because they know how fast a baby/child can lose weight.

He'll gain it back quickly when his eating and drinking get back to normal.
