Vegan? good or bad idea??

Okay, my best friend just found out she's pregnant and the baby is due September 2nd.
Now I'm super worried for her because she's a hardcore Vegan but the only reason she became a vegan is because of her fiance.
I want everyones opinion on this. do you think its a smart move for her to stay a vegan during the pregnancy?
or should she go back to eating regular foods then once she has the baby go back to being a vegan?.
Im really worried about her, but its her body and i cant make her do anything she doesn't want to do and i know Derek
( her fiance) has a huge influence over her.
But if i get everyones opinion, ill feel better talking to her about it knowing how other people feel.

My best friend is a Vegan, and I honestly think it is ok for your friend to remain a vegan during pregnancy. My best bud ( the one that is gonna be the God Mother) says she feels so much healthier now then she did when she ate meat

Here is an interesting article

Re: Vegan? good or bad idea??

I think as long as she takes her prenatal vitamins she should be fine. Express you concern as something maybe she should talk to the doctor about it. But I think as long as she is getting her vitamins and the right amount of cals that she should be fine.

I agree with the others. I would think she'll be ok as long as she takes the vitamins. But she should definitely talk to her Dr about it.

Does she eat any fish or eggs at all? People all over the world give birth to healthy babies on all different sorts of diets. My only concern would be was she getting enough protein and calicum. Otherwise, she should be fine, but as always take her dr's advise.

Re: Vegan? good or bad idea??

As long as she is taking her prenatal vitamins and eating a variety of veggies she should be okay. Has she discussed it with her doctor?

Re: Vegan? good or bad idea??

If she was eating a healthy vegan diet before she was pregnant, then she should be able to continue eating that diet. Additional vitamin supplements are available, too. She will probably want to find a doctor who is sympathetic to the vegan lifestyle, if possible - not someone who will insist she eat a steak once a week, KWIM?

I would think as long as she is eating healthy all should be ok.

Re: Vegan? good or bad idea??

Vegans don't eat dairy or anything that comes from an animal (eggs, cheese etc) is that right?

I really don't know much about being a vegan and I don't know anyone who is, but she is going to need a lot of calcium for baby's bones and teeth etc, how do you get calcium when you don't eat any form af animal, seafood ar dairy? I would definately get her to ask her doctor about the calcium levels. Unless she is planning on eating a Preserving pot full of spinach evey day

Re: Vegan? good or bad idea??

I just found this.

Vegetarian and Semi-Vegetarian Diets
Different people follow different forms of vegetarianism. A true vegetarian eats no meat at all, including chicken and fish. A lacto-ovo vegetarian eats dairy products and eggs, but excludes meat, fish, and poultry. It follows, then, that a lacto vegetarian eats dairy products but not eggs, whereas an ovo vegetarian eats eggs but not dairy products.

A stricter form of vegetarianism is veganism (pronounced: vee-gun-izm). Not only are eggs and dairy products excluded from a vegan diet, so are animal products like honey and gelatin.

Re: Vegan? good or bad idea??

My cousin is a strict Vegan and his girlfriend (practically his wife!) is a vegetarian. Her doc have her some extra vitimins and gave her some guidelines to follow to ensure that she was getting everything she and the baby would need. You can still eat Vegan or Vegetarian while pregnant, but there are certain things you are going to need more of, like protein. She will probably have to adjust her diet to make sure she is getting sufficient amounts of everything - that's what the extra vitimins are for. She'll be fine if she follows the docs prescribed diet for her.

Re: Vegan? good or bad idea??

I told my best bud about this thread and here is what she had to say ( since she is the Vegan)

I don't think it is a problem either. I know I've come across some information as well as sites where pregnant women stay on (if not vegan) vegetarian diets throughout their pregnancy as well as afterward and have perfectly healthy babies. I mean, as long as this woman keeps up w/her nutrition. She will just have to be more diligent about eating adequate amts of veggies/fruits & taking (doctor recommended) supplements/or prenatal vitamins more so than the avg meat-eating pregnant women. She def cannot slack off w/it or the health of her baby as well as herself could be put in jeopardy. Again, I mean, it's not that difficult to manage. Common sense goes a long way! She should listen to her body and it's needs during her pregnancy. If she starts feeling even a little funny or ill during and think the cause is her diet then something is wrong & she needs to consult a doctor/or nutritionist. Actually, she needs to consult w/a nutritionist anyway to find out the necessary kinds & amts of foods as wells as supplements to intake and so forth & so on. If she doesn't want to do that then she needs to do proper research on this topic on her own.

She's a strict vegan, nothing that comes from an animal, not even honey. But then again she's not the healthiest vegan their is either. I'm just hoping that she's smart about listening to the doctor, because is the fiance doesn't like it. she wont do it. Sad i know, but true. Thanks everyone for your advice, i'll talk to her and try to be as encouraging as i can be without offending her.

Esther is a very very healthy Vegan, I am proud of the girl, I know I couldn't do what she does.

Re: Vegan? good or bad idea??

I was a vegetarian through my first 2 pregnancies (for 11 years). Everything was fine. I was not a vegan however. They do have much stricter dietary guidelines. I added animal protein back into my diet after Zachariah was born adn I was nursing. It was just too hard to keep up with my protein needs and milk supply. I was just too darn tired and wasn't doing a lot of cooking! After I added it back in I never went back to vegetarian. But I often choose meat free when given the choice.

Re: Vegan? good or bad idea??

I am highly allergic to dairy. I ate a lot of spinach, broccoli and green leafy vegatables for my calicum. Does she like Total Cereal? If I remember correctly, it has a lot of calicum in it. My concern for her is that the baby may rob her body of calicum in her teeth and bones. After two babies, my teeth were starting to get transparent. That is because the babies were leeching calicum from my body. Since then, they have gone back to normal. My concern for her is if she doesn't follow her dr's orders and eat a healthy diet, she could have problems with tooth and bone loss.

That is not to scare either of you, but a tool for you to explain to her how important good nutrition is while she is pregnant. She doesn't want false teeth at a young age and ostioperosis. Good luck convincing your friend to eat healthier.
