I thought some of you, especially Kimmer and others with autistic children, would be interested in reading this article.

Re: Article on families with autistic children

This is why early intervension is so important. My dd used to tantrum like that when she was younger. She is almost indistinguishable from other children now. However, we are not putting her in public school where she would just suffer massive overload time. At home, we can control the environment. As a parent of a child with mild austim, we have gone out of our way to emphasize that rude or ill mannered behavior is not acceptable. We feel like good manners are the grease of social situations. She may not be able to read other people's social cues, but she will be a well mannered lady.

Let's face it, how far is this girl going to get in life with her poor manners and bad behaviors? The world does not care if someone has autism once the child leaves the family home.

I say this program is more than worth it, if it helps this girl get control of herself, because the world is not going to be anywhere near as understanding as her family has been.

Giving in to the tantrums is NEVER a good idea. I just can't convince others of that.

Letting them run roughshod over the rest of the family is not a good idea either. One of these days, that girl is going to want to leave home for college and her roommates are not going to take to her using their stuff all the time and running over their privacy very well. Even autistic kids need to learn boundries.

Re: Article on families with autistic children

This is a very thin edge parents of the autistic children walk on.Its better if it is identified at an early age then there are greater chances of complete recovery. Now with marissa her parents either have to put up with every demand of hers or face the possibility of her going completely out of control.Cure is extremely expensive and to top it there are many quakers who claim to be autism experts and are unable to diagnose the disease at an earlier stage.
My best wishes to marissa and her parents,i hope she gets all right soon.
