Two Questions

The first question I have is, When did you ladies turn your child's car seat to forward facing? Logan is 25lbs and 10 months old. He is starting to be really observant of everything around him, and now I am noticing he is getting bored in his seat when we go somewhere and ends up crying the entire time we are in the vehicle or falls asleep (if its a long ride). I think turing him around would benefit his curiosity to look around and keep him occupied. The prob is, everyone keeps telling me he needs to be a year old or something will happen to him if he is forward facing. I looked up online and it also says on AAA that it is best they be one year and 20lbs before you turn the car seat around. Did you all follow this rule?

The second question is, Logan has become very difficult to change his clothes and diaper. He is kicking, screaming, crying, and putting his hands below his waist when I am changing his diaper. I have tried turing it on cartoons, the animal channel, giving him toys and nothing works. The object will hold his attention for about 5sec and then he is back to thrashing around. Do any of you have this problem if so what do you do? if anything can help...

Re: Two Questions

I did follow the 1 year rule on the carseat, it's almost time so don't rush it just yet.

On the diaper/clothes changing thing: I would apply a little authority and inform him that your the mommy and you must change his diaper or clothes. I would re-adjust his thrashing about to the laying position and continue doing that with a stern voice informing him that you will allow me to change your diaper and when I'm finished you can then play. Remind him throughout the changing experience that your almost done and praise him for being a good boy and lying still. JMO on that! Not sure what other mothers might think.

Ditto Karen on both.

Re: Two Questions

On the car seat, you might want to discuss with your pediatrician. If he's tall enough to be pushing on the seat of the car, and heavy enough, your ped may tell you it's OK to turn him around. The reason you're supposed to wait until 1 year is because the neck muscles are not really strong enough to hold the head in case of impact. If he's ahead of the curve on that, or if he's just too tall to sit reversed safely, it might be time. But definitely talk to your pediatrician about it.

Re: Two Questions

Ditto to what Karen said. My youngest outgrew her infant seat by a lot, so we cheated and put her face forward a few weeks early in her new seat. As for the thrashing, I think that is a normal stage. Both my kids did it. Then there is the diaper removal stage. All I can say is you get faster and faster at it.

YES, I followed the car seat rule. The reason babies have to be rear facing until a year old is developmental. It has to do with their heads/necks and what would happen if you were in an accident. I would not take the chance. Both of my kids had this interactive mirror thing that was made for the car (it hooks or pins to the seat in front of their car seat--near their feet), and that entertained them. You can also find other toys that are made for the car.
And the other problem you described is normal. Both of my kids got to a point where they didn't like having to stop and get their diapers changed. I did the same stuff you did, but with Logan, why don't you buy him a new toy, but only let him see it during diaper changes? You may have to have a stash of toys like this, so that when one loses its appeal, you'll have a back up handy. You could try books too, but just be sure you only let him see these certain ones during diaper changes. Keep them put away otherwise.

Re: Two Questions

Also, I agree with Karen's suggestion. It just depends on what your parenting style is. I did not have to have the special toy stash for diaper changes, but I think it might be worth a try.

Re: Two Questions

Thanks ladies for all of your suggestions. I really appreciate it. I will apply what Karen said first since his birthday is approaching and save one of thoes toys for diaper changes if the first thing don't work.

I have decieded to wait to turn him around since he did have a prob with him neck muscles early on. We tried the toys that hook onto the seat, but we have had to take them back bc they don't work on the back seat of our truck very well.

Thanks again for all of your suggestions.

Re: Two Questions

We turned Drew around to face forward at about 8 or 9 months, but he was HUGE and already weighed 30+ pounds (was wear 12 & 18 mo clothes already), so the ped OK'd it. Ally stayed facing backwards until she was almot 18 months becsue she was tiny. Heck, she stayed in her bassinet until she was a year old! Check with your ped.

As for the diaper, both of mine screamed bloody murder when you changed them. Drew becaue he hated to stop what he was doing and Ally cause she hated the cold. It gets better - a little, anyway!

Re: Two Questions

I'm going to keep Lucas rear facing as long as possible. I think the carseat I got him is RF up to 35 lbs?

Re: Two Questions

I kept Brenna rear facing for the entire first year and then some because she hadn't reached 20lbs. Eventually she got too tall to be rear facing though and I had to turn her before the 20lb mark. She is almost 3 now and still only 25lbs
