Steps in children's stories and movies

My dd has recently gotten into the Disney princesses. Step parents and step siblings don't do well in a lot of these princess stories and folk tales. Although my dd doesn't have either, she knows plenty of kids who do. When she asks me about the rest of the story, I always tell her they worked out their differences and became friends and everyone lived happily ever after.

I know at one time there had to be a reason all stepmothers were evil and old women pretty much got the evil shaft too. But today, we know neither to be true. What do you tell your kids regarding the "evil" step parents and children?

It has never come up. Probably because we always stress that these are just "stories", make-believe.

I'm in the same boat with Brenda. I haven't read any fairy tales lately with my SD that involves an 'evil step parent'. We should sit down to Cinderella some night and see what her opinion is. I'm quite curious now!

I always call myself the "evil stepmother" with my step daughter. When she was little she told me one day that "Cinderella had to be fake cause step moms were way nicer!". Now every time I do something to p!ss her off or annoy her, or even just to joke around I will ask her "am I the evil stepmother yet???" She always tells me "nope, keep trying".
Mine all understand the dynamics of step families so it's never been an issue here.

I hadn't thought about it, but that is true, Liz. Evenin Meet the Robinsons, the kid's biological parents are dead. Actually in sleeping Beauty, the princess does have two living parents. I wonder what Disney has against Moms. it is usually the Mom who is dead (or possibly run off some stories like Aladin aren't specfic).
