Quick Question for A Friend About Homeschooling

Well its actually my moms friend. Her X-Daughter-in-Law is homeschooling her two grandchildern. Has been for quite a while now. The daughter is 7 and the son is 5.

My moms friend took her other grandchildern (9 and 12) to visit their cousins one day was visiting and what not left about five or so hours later. On the way back home the 12 year old says "G-ma, I don't think 'Abby' can read" She asked why she thought that and she says "Well she came up to me and asked what book I wanted to read and I said go over and get Spot(or something like that) it was laying in plain sight with two other books with it and she could not figure out the book title"

When they got home my moms friend called to ask about it. "Abby" anwsered the phone and she asked "Abby has mommy been teaching you everyday?" She said no, that mommy has been taking them to her boyfriends house to play with some kids.

Two weeks later they went over for another visit and she was able to get "Abby" alone to ask her some things like words, adding simple things like 1+2 etc. and she could not do it. She said mommy has not taught her that yet.

I was wondering, when your homeschooling, is their certin requirements that need to be met? Is there anyone that checks on the progress of homeschooled childern? What (if anything) could my moms friend do?

Re: Quick Question for A Friend About Homeschooling

Yes, they have to be tested every year with a standard achievement test the rest of the school kids take. But requirements vary from state to state. You did not say if Abby was five or seven. A lot of 5 year olds can't read, but at 7, she should know something.

I don't want to bother with all the rules, plus my dd doesn't like to show how much she knows and I don't think she would show a classroom teacher either. Only the computer knows how smart she is. She surprises me all the time with how well she can read. So next year, we are doing online school. Connections Academy is public online school that is available free in Ohio. This is something to check out. Both Shona and Brenda use it and love it. I wish we had it here! Right now, we are saving for another private online school, because we can't get CA in my state.

Re: Quick Question for A Friend About Homeschooling

No Lenora, they don't. Not every year, it depends greatly on the state. And it also depends on if she is actually homeschooling or "unschooling"
Which I REALLY do not agree with but hey..not my kids.

Re: Quick Question for A Friend About Homeschooling

I do think it varys by state. I know for the longest time in Pa it was hard to homeschool your own child and you had to go through the school district even if you DID homeschool.

I'd check state to state and see.

This is for Pa....in Pa it says you DO have to take achievements tests but only in certain grades. A certified teacher/tutor has to evaluate work at the end of the year. And you have to submit your portfolio to the school district before they allow you to homeschool.

I remember how hard it was for my friends parents to be allowed to homeschool them. They were Jehovah Witness and the mother didn't want her children in public school and she had a heck of a time pulling them out. It is getting easier though.

So you MOST definitely have to check your state laws before you do homeschool.

Re: Quick Question for A Friend About Homeschooling

My state tests every year starting in grade 3. I don't want to mess with all the paperwork Wendy was talking about. With private virtual school, they send a letter to the school district and it is exactly as if they were in private school with a brick and mortar building.

Re: Quick Question for A Friend About Homeschooling

7 year old is in 2nd grade. In my school, they know how to read...Kelsey is bringing home 4 page books in kindy that she has to read to me once a week. 1st grade they are reading 10 page books, 2nd grade chapter books. Christian is reading the Magic Tree House books, Captain Underpants--that is basic for 2nd grade. She SHOULD be reading more whether she is homeschooled or in public school

Re: Quick Question for A Friend About Homeschooling

Wow. That is just lazy. Plain and simple. This is an example of things that give actual homeschoolers that use a mandated curriculum a bad name. There should be something through the Department of Education that you can find information out.

Re: Quick Question for A Friend About Homeschooling

Looks like Ohio has moderate regulations and that if she followed the rules, she should know how to read. There are very few with high regulations and my state is one of those

Re: Quick Question for A Friend About Homeschooling

Stacy,

If I was the grandparent of this child, I would set up a "pretend" play date for her and I. I would take her to a facility like Sylvan or something and have her tested. I would then take those results to the mother and blow this MOTHER out of the water. Without proof it's hear say and no authority or court is going to touch it.
