Very scary!

I don't know if I will ever leave Brenna unattended while she is eating again.
I made her lunch and because she is almost 3 years old, didn't think anything of putting her up at the table and leaving the room. Not 30 seconds after sitting down at the computer to check my email I heard a choking noise from the kitchen. I ran back in there and Brenna was sitting at the table, drool running down her chin, eyes wide, and making gurgling noises in the back of her throat. I thought she had just taken something down the wrong way and patted her on the back a few times before realizing something was seriously wrong. I scooped her up and put her over my knee and could feel her abdomen sinking in and out violently. I hit her on the back a few times and then scooped my finger in the back of her mouth (I KNOW you aren't supposed to do that! but I was in a panic) and popped out a meatball from the can of chef boyardee mini-bites. The whole ordeal probably didn't last a minute or two but it felt like a lifetime.
Afterwards she seemed fine and wanted to eat her lunch so I chopped all the remaining meatballs into 4ths (a bit extreme) and sat with her while she finished.

Re: Very scary!

How scary, I know you were shaking afterwards. You saved her though! Good thinking and reacting! It's hard to stay calm and think through things like that.

I was just reading an article that indicates that our brain under panic does'nt work like you think it does. When in panic mode the brain can only perform things from memory not logic. So it's best to do as you know....

in emergency crisis situations, time is what you do not have. In these situations, intuitive is best....

You did a good job!

Re: Very scary!

I'm glad everything is OK now.

Trust me.. I know you aren't supposed to do a finger sweep.. but I've done it before because there is no logic when in panic mode.

Re: Very scary!

been there!

I always cut those stupid meatballs up into little bits. Just because it's happened to us too.

Re: Very scary!

We have a friend who is a police officer, and he worked a case where a toddler choked to death on a grape. Since he told us about that, I cut all of Travis's grapes into 4ths.

Re: Very scary!

Now grapes, I've always cut in half at least ... same with her hotdogs. It just didn't register, and she's eaten them a thousand times, to cut up those dern meatballs.

Re: Very scary!

I cut Noah's Spaghettii O meatballs in half but not his grapes. Does that make sense? I figure he bites his grapes as he eats them but shovels in the meatballs.

That was scary Elaine. You did the right thing.

Re: Very scary!

Both my girls have had choking episodes and nothing is more scary! You did a great job, and I think we have all done the finger-sweep when back-whacking didn't work. When in that panic mode we will do anything to save our child.

Re: Very scary!

I'm glad she is okay. I have choked many times and I am a grown up. Don't beat yourself up too bad.
