Appauled!!!

A place holder for my venting purposes. This is an email I sent to Jimmy's school principal.

I have a couple of concerns/issues that I need to address ASAP!

James Brickenden was absent on Thursday because he was ill. I allowed him to return to school on Friday. Upon picking him up promptly from the Daycare van on Friday at 3:30 it was apparent that Jimmy was very ill. So ill his jaw was querying and his fever was over 100 degrees! I KNOW THAT this didn't happen in 10 minutes arriving from school to daycare. I received class work from his class indicating in writing:
He sat for 20 minutes and just played instead of working!

Really, my special needs child with Autism is allowed to sit in a classroom and play???? Does your facility really understand that Autistic children have language barriers? that sometimes prohibit the ability to inform an adult of an illness? I am completely appalled that my son is suppose to get an education and he's allowed to sit for 20 minutes and play. Why wasn't he redirected? What was she doing while he played? Was he behind the cubical wall again?

Mr. Yarman I urge to correct this behavior even if it means moving Jimmy out of that class....Thank you for your time in this matter.

Please let me know if you would like to discuss this matter in person. Thank you.

Re: Appauled!!!

How rediculous! Something serious could have happened to him with a feaver that high. I don't think I would have been able to just email. My butt would have been down at that school raisin cain.

Do they have a rep for that kind of behavior with other childern? If so, have you talked to other mothers as to what they did about the problem?

Re: Appauled!!!

I'm going to speak with a firm called HopeforLearning on Wednesday about my concerns and address my issues. I'm trying desperatly to get him to this school:

The Autistic Scholarship covers the tuition which is 20k. I just need to modify the IEP and get everything in place starting this week by meeting with the consulting firm.

Re: Appauled!!!

That sounds like a fantastic school Karen. I hope that everything works out and you can get him in there soon. I hope something gets done about the behavior of his teacher also.

Re: Appauled!!!

Thanks guys, he's not at school today so I felt safe enough to send an email prior to his return. Plus I needed it in writing for proof.

Re: Appauled!!!

I haven't heard from the school. He still has a very bad cough. He's let out of school at 3:20, I had him in the doctors office at 4:00 that day. I have all proof I need. He has an ear infection and upper respirtory.

Re: Appauled!!!

Thats terrible Karen. No child should have to go though the day not feeling well. Just because the child is playing don't nessarialy mean nothing is wrong.

My brother got a very high feaver when he was about 10. He didn't complain that anything was wrong and still went about his day like everything was ok. Two days of it my mom took him to the doctor and found out he had a double ear infection and strep. My mom and the doctor was amazed at why he was in no pain, so they did some kind of test and found out he had a very high pain tolerance. If my mom wouldn't have felt him, she would have never known.

There is no excuse for him being alone for 20mins playing without some kind of interaction from the teacher, if there was then she would have felt a feaver on him.

Re: Appauled!!!

You STILL haven't heard back from the school? Seriously? What administrator doesn't have all their emails forwarded to a Blackberry? I'm just a teacher and I have mine sent to me on mine so I can take all parent calls and emails at home or in the car or where ever. My principal is STILL at school now answering calls at 7:30 pm.

Re: Appauled!!!

Update:

Of course the repsponse I got from the Principal came at 4:35 yesterday. They know I leave work at 4:30 ummm. Little was he aware that I check my work email from home. I got the email about 7:30ish. Of course he had every excuse of the teacher was redirecting him and was standing over him and no one noticed on Friday that he was sick and he didn't seem to act sick. He's AUTISTIC most of the time the child won't even indicate he's not feeling well. The big key for me he will ask for water and will then take his tempature.

On the other issue of allowing him to play. The note stated exactly what I quoted. She didn't indicate that Jimmy refused to do the work after several attempts to direct him. All of the testing in and out of the district and it's included in his IEP indicates that Jimmy does very well with one on one direction. I KNOW IN MY HEART AND FOR A FACT had he been given each step and walked through he would have done the work. If not she would have indicated an issue with his behavior. BULLSH!T BULLSH!T

I indicated this and of course this morning he has no rebuddle other than let's meet. Oh we're going to meet alright!

Re: Appauled!!!

You deserve answers, and I don't blame you for being upset. Karen, I think YOU need to let HIM (the principal) know that YOU WANT TO SEE HIM IN PERSON about this. I would not leave the ball in his court, but I would take it upon myself to be there in person letting him see and hear just how unhappy you are with the situation. I would not yell, and I would pick my words wisely, and I would be straightfoward and honest, just like you were in the note, but I know demanding a face to face meeting is going to get a lot more results than an email, based on my past experience as a teacher and with the education system in general.

Re: Appauled!!!

I hope that you can get him into that school. Sounds like the school that he is in now has absolutely no desire in helping deal with the special needs that he has

Thanks everyone! I'm excited about meeting with Katie tomorrow. I want this to move quickly so that I can have some peace for spring and summer knowing he's going to be in a school that's acceptable.

Let us know how everything goes... I hope you get him into the other school!

Re: Appauled!!!

Unless it's in his IEP to be isolated while working, my first concern his the cubicle thing. If he's back there out of sight, he is also out of mind. I bet that if he was in with the rest of the class, the fever and playing would have been noticed and dealt with a lot sooner than twenty minutes.

Good luck with the meetings.

Re: Appauled!!!

If schools for special children behave like this, the condition is pathetic. What is the difference between a normal school and a school for special children? Don't they know they know the difference? The teachers are not properly trained i guess?
