Tri-Vi-Sol

Well I have a question, I am breastfeeding and supplementing enfamil (about 6oz a day at the most) I went to the dr and he told me Jerren needs to take Tri Vi Sol, Does Jerren REALLY need the multivitamins? I know vit D is found in sunlight but I figured since we usually take him out every now and then he should be fine ... I still havent given him the vitamins because I don't want to give him something he doesn't need.

Anyone else giving their baby Tri Vi Sol? Opinions?

Re: Tri-Vi-Sol

Is there any real reason he said he needed them? Just because you're breastfeeding doesn't mean he needs the vitamins. One of my kids I was told needed them, Kyan or Teagan. Tried them, HATED them. They made this horrible face and spit it out everywhere.

Becareful when asking opinions Lisa. Most of the time as moms, we have to go with our guts no matter what the doctor or others tell us. I had a doctor tell me to stop nursing.. but I didn't. I had one tell me I really needed to nurse, and when I couldn't I got this feeling I was looked down on. I nursed my last two kids for 16 months each. And there are times you just have to go with what YOUR instincts are telling you. If he is not jaundiced, and if he is gaining weight, and healthy personally I wouldn't give them to him. But that is just ME. In the end, you have to do what ever YOU feel is right.

Re: Tri-Vi-Sol

I think the general concern with breast-fed babies is a lack of vitamin D as very little of it is transfered through breast milk. However, I'm always leery of giving a healthy infant anything at all. Our bodies were created to survive and thrive on breast milk and have been doing it for lifetimes ... why decide now that it isn't enough??
I do however, recomend that the breast-feeding mom continue to take her prenatal vitamin until she weans.

I would not even worry about it...I'm sure he'll be outside a little bit this spring summer, right? I swear Drs are so gung ho to medicate. I am becoming a hippie.

Re: Tri-Vi-Sol

I agree, Becca. Shona is right. I even had a dr tell me breastfeeding was child abuse. He lost my business that day. Go with your gut. If your little guy is gaining and not jaundiced, then I don't see why he needs to take vitamins. Some drs are big on taking every suppliment they can think of. When it comes to things like that, I always try to remember that these guys often get kickbacks from drug companies.

Re: Tri-Vi-Sol

1. they smell terrible
2. they taste terrible

Go with your gut. He is your child, and if you have concerns, call the doctor and just tell him you don't quite understand why you would need to give him extra vitamins. ANY good physician would understand a phone call like that coming from a sleep deprived, first time Mommy.
