I have a friend that thinks she is pregnant. She's had nausea, no cycle, and weight gain. The blood test levels were not very high. She is on an IUD but has had regular cycles on it. Is it possible for it to be an ectopic pregnancy? She has had spotting recently. He Dr wont do an ultra sound until after doin an exam but she has no appts until May???

Re: Ectopic Pregnancy?

I don't know anything about ectopic pregnancy, but what if it is that, and her doctor wants her to wait until MAY? I do know that she can't afford to wait that long to find out because if it is an ectopic pregnancy, it will mean a serious health problem--ruptured tube, etc, if she waits that long. I think she needs to find another doctor and get some answers asap.

Re: Ectopic Pregnancy?

Just another note. She has no insurance. Would it be better to get into another md or go to the ER? ER would usually write off charges for financial hardship. Also a md doesnt usually have ultra sounds in office here?

Re: Ectopic Pregnancy?

Go to an ER. She can't wait until May. They will do an ultrasound b/c of the spotting.

Re: Ectopic Pregnancy?

I agree with Abby and started to put in my original post that she should go to the ER, but then I thought, no maybe the doctor--my doctor has an ultrasound tech that works full time in his office, and his office is right across the street from the hospital.

Re: Ectopic Pregnancy?

An ectopic pregnancy is a pregnancy that develops outside a woman's uterus (womb). This happens when the fertilized egg from the ovary does not implant itself normally in the uterus. It's a pregnancy that develops outside the womb, usually in one of the fallopian tubes. That is why it is also known as a tubal pregnancy. As the pregnancy grows, it causes pain and bleeding and, if not recognized, the tube can rupture, causing internal bleeding.
One-sided pain in the lower abdomen that is severe and persistent is the most common symptom. Many women describe it as an intense stabbing pain. Any woman who experiences this and who could possibly be pregnant should see a doctor.

How did I miss this. Usually the ER is much more expensive depending on the level. To get a FA usually the person needs to make like less then 2k or something a month and sometimes they don't even cover the whole thing. (that's how it is in SAN AN.)

So what is the update?

Re: Ectopic Pregnancy?

Although we talk a lot about hCG levels and ultrasound studies, the clinical impression of the gynecologist or reproductive endocrinologist is the most important factor in making a timely diagnosis of ectopic pregnancy.
An ectopic pregnancy is a pregnancy that develops outside a woman's uterus (womb). This happens when the fertilized egg from the ovary does not implant itself normally in the uterus. Instead, the egg develops somewhere else in the abdomen. The products of this conception are abnormal and cannot develop into fetuses.
