Baffled by abdominal pain

3 nights ago Zach woke me up around 1:00 am crying of stomach pain. I assumed gas or other pain associated with constipation because it's been an ongoing problem since he was 1. After a while he finally fell asleep and woke up in the morning ok. Aroun 11:00 am the school called me and said that Zach was sleeping in the nurses office after complaining of stomach pain. I picked him up and took him home where he spent the rest of the day lying on the couch in and out of sleep, curled up in a ball, and crying off and on. I asked him if it was a "sick" hurt or if it felt like someone kicked him and he said "kicked". He showed me where it hurt (an inch below his belly button) and said it is painful to touch that area. By bedtime he was double over and screaming through bared teeth so I took him to the ER. We waited around for hours. It was 1 am by the time we got an xray and 2:30 by the time we saw a doctor ... Zach was out cold. The doctor said that the xray showed no signs of apendicitis and while there was some amount of bowels in his intestines it wasn't an alarming amount. We got sent home with a paper for signs to watch for for apendicitis but no suggestions for pain relief. Yesterday was okay off and on. He complained some and at times you could see pain on his face but there was so much going on and so many friends to play with that he seemed better. Last night around 11:00 the crying and screaming started again and continued for 2 hours until he fell asleep on the couch. This morning he is still misserable.
I'm just baffled. He's urinating fine. He's having bowel movements. And while he isn't eating well, he still has an appetite.
Help.

Re: Baffled by abdominal pain

Oh that sounds terrible. Poor kid

I'm trying to think of different things with belly aches and I would have assumed appendicitis

We are having Kel tested for Chrone's Disease which causes belly troubles. It runs on Den's side of the family. We've been taking Zantac because we thought it was acid reflux but that doesn't seem to be helping.

Poor boy!

Did they consider doing a cat scan? Sometimes they can catch things that x-rays can't.

I hope what he has goes away soon.

Re: Baffled by abdominal pain

Could it be a hernia? What about taking him to an internist or to a gastroen--- whatever that kind of doctor is called.

Re: Baffled by abdominal pain

I too was going to suggest a hernia. Or, it could be lactose intolerence? I am Lactose intolerant and it is horrible pain! Try giving him a Tums tonight and see if it helps. Can't hurt anything.
Hope ya'll figure it out and that Zach starts feeling better very soon!

Re: Baffled by abdominal pain

I was going to say does it look like there is a hernia? Or could he have IBS? I wonder if he might have some food issues.... lactose intolerant or possibly even have celiac issues?

I would take him to his primary pediatrician and get him to a pediatric GI. It sounds odd to me. Good luck.

Re: Baffled by abdominal pain

My first thought was a hernia too, perhaps just b/c I have one right now! There are several different kinds of hernia, ranging in severity. For the most common kinds of hernia you can see a bulge but there are other kinds, though more rare that you can't see. May be a good idea to get a specialist to look at him, asap.

Lactose intolerance is a good idea, also check his diet, he may be extremely sensitive to fats and other products in foods?

I feel so badly for your little guy. Many, many hugs to you and him. I hope that you get this sorted out soon and good job for being such an on top of it Mom!
